Rear suspension shock absorber: quattro vehicles (Audi 80 B4)

Removal



1. Place the vehicle on jack stands and ensure that it is securely supported.

2. Loosen the wheel mounting bolts and remove the wheel.

3. Place a support under the transverse arm on the side where the shock absorber strut will be removed.

4. Unscrew the bolt securing the bottom of the shock absorber strut.

5. Remove the four bolts securing the top of the shock absorber strut. While doing this, hold the strut so that it does not fall (see arrows in the illustration).

6. Remove the wishbone mounting bolt at the top of the shock absorber strut and disconnect the wishbone.

Installation



8. First secure the bottom of the shock absorber strut by screwing in the mounting bolt. Before doing this, replace the bolt and self-locking nut with new ones. Do not tighten the bolt.



9. Secure the top of the shock absorber strut by tightening the bolts to a torque of 55 Nm.

10. Fasten the upper wishbone to the shock absorber strut. Do not tighten the mounting bolt. Before installing the wishbone, replace the bolt and self-locking nut with new ones.

11. Lower the vehicle.

12. Tighten the shock absorber strut bottom mounting nut to 90 Nm, then turn it an additional ¼ turn (90°). Tighten the upper wishbone mounting bolt nut to 70 Nm, then turn it an additional ½ turn (180°).

Attention! If the shock absorber strut mounting bolts are tightened on a raised vehicle, the silent blocks will be under tension.
