2. When the engine is cold, the fluid level should be between the maximum and minimum marks on the expansion tank.
Attention! With a warm engine, the fluid level is always higher, so a too high level in this case should not mislead you!
3. To add coolant, open the cap, if the engine is hot, put a thick cloth on the cap and slowly open it. Slowly unscrewing the cap allows you to gradually reduce the pressure in the system. If you open the lid too quickly, hot water may splash out of the tank due to pressure release and cause burns.
4. When adding liquid, its level should not be higher than the maximum mark. When heated, the fluid expands and excess fluid exits the system.
5. A small amount of liquid can be topped up both with a warm and cold engine.
Coolant level in expansion tank (arrow) must be between the minimum and maximum marks. Large deviations in either direction indicate a malfunction, the cause of the defect must be established. If the engine is hot, the screw cap must first be opened carefully by one turn, otherwise there is a risk of burns. For fidelity when opening, it is advisable to use a rag.
Engine is losing coolant
If the engine loses a large amount of fluid while driving, never top up with cold water. In this case, the engine will receive a cold shock, which may deform the cylinder head. The head seal becomes loose and coolant can enter the engine's circulating lubrication system. In the most unfavorable case, due to cold shock, the cylinder block cracks. Wait until the engine has cooled down, add water and ask the nearest workshop to determine the cause of the loss of coolant.
