The thermostat can be in different places, it depends on the type of engine. In the 1.8L turbocharged engine, the thermostat is located behind the water pump.
You may need a new thermostat to complete the job. Thermostats are not repairable. If the old thermostat is installed, it is still necessary to replace the seal on which the thermostat is located in the housing. The thermostat housing seal must also be replaced. In addition, you will need a container to collect the coolant.
By the way, you can check whether the removed thermostat is really faulty, however, it is unlikely that you will be able to do this on the way. Hang the thermostat on a wire and lower it with cold water. Also dip a suitable thermometer, such as a canning thermometer, into the water container. Gradually heating the water, check the beginning of the thermostat opening, the thermostat should open at about 84°C. After heating to approximately 100°C, the thermocouple pin must protrude from the thermostat by at least 7 mm.
Attention! A stuck thermostat can cause serious engine damage due to overheating. The coolant begins to boil, its cooling effect drops rapidly. For this reason, if a defect occurs on the way, do not continue driving under any circumstances. It is best to tow the car to the place of repair.
When heated in a water bath, the thermostat should not touch the walls of the vessel
After heating the thermostat to approximately 100°C, dimension b should be approximately 7 mm larger than dimension a
1. Open the expansion tank cap to relieve pressure in the cooling system. Be careful when the engine is warm as there is a risk of scalding. Drain the coolant (cm. «Coolant replacement»).
2. After loosening the screw 4, remove the connecting pipe 3, sealing ring 2 and thermostat 1.
The easiest way to remove the thermostat is in a 1.8 liter turbocharged engine
3. Pay attention to the following when installing the thermostat. Use new seals, sealing surfaces must be cleaned or smoothed. Moisten the sealing ring with coolant.
4. If you want to test a freshly removed or new thermostat, put it in a container of water and heat the water. The valve should open at the appropriate temperature.
5. Fill in coolant.
6. Install soundproofing.
