The thermostat can be located in different places, it depends on the engine type. In the 1.8L turbocharged engine, the thermostat is located behind the water pump.
To complete the job successfully, you may need a new thermostat. Thermostats cannot be repaired. If you install the old thermostat, you still need to replace the seal on which the thermostat is located in the housing. The thermostat housing seal must also be replaced. In addition, you will need a container to collect the coolant.
By the way, you can check whether the removed thermostat is really faulty, although it is unlikely that you will be able to do this on the way. Hang the thermostat on a wire and lower it with cold water. Also lower a suitable thermometer, for example, a canning thermometer, into the container with water. Gradually heating the water, check the beginning of the opening of the thermostat, the thermostat should open at about 84°C. After heating to about 100°C, the pin of the thermoelement should protrude from the thermostat by at least 7 mm.
Warning! A seized thermostat can cause serious engine damage due to overheating. The coolant begins to boil, and its cooling effect rapidly decreases. For this reason, if the defect occurs on the road, do not continue driving under any circumstances. It is best to tow the car to a repair shop.
When heating in a water bath, the thermostat should not touch the walls of the vessel
After heating the thermostat to approximately 100°C, dimension b should be approximately 7 mm larger than dimension a
1. Open the expansion tank cap to relieve pressure in the cooling system. Be careful if the engine is hot, as there is a risk of scalding. Drain the coolant (see "Replacing the coolant").
2. Loosen screw 4, remove connecting pipe 3, sealing ring 2 and thermostat 1.
The easiest way to remove a thermostat is in a 1.8L turbocharged engine
3. When installing the thermostat, pay attention to the following. Use new seals, the sealing surfaces should be cleaned or smoothed. Moisten the sealing ring with coolant.
4. If you want to check a newly removed or new thermostat, place it in a container with water and heat the water. The valve should open at the appropriate temperature.
5. Fill with coolant.
6. Install soundproofing.
