The automatic transmission has a torque converter lock-up clutch to avoid torque converter slip due to the gearbox design in 4th and, under certain conditions, in 3rd gear. This ensures proper operation of the gearbox in these gears and reduces fuel consumption.
Depending on the driving style, there is a need to select the mode of operation of the gearbox.
Transmission operating modes
Using the key «SPORT», you can switch between sport mode and economy mode.
The modes are switched by pressing a key.
When the sport mode is activated, the green control arrow in the key lights up.
Mode switching can be performed both before the start and during the movement.
Note: The enabled mode is retained even after the engine is turned off.
Economy driving mode
This is the normal switch position for normal driving.
The program provides fuel-efficient driving by performing early upshifts and late downshifts.
Sports driving mode
To drive in sport mode, switch to this program. Late shifting to higher gears allows you to fully utilize the power reserve of the engine. Downshifting is performed at a higher RPM than in economy driving mode.
emergency program
In the event of a malfunction in the control system, the automation switches to emergency mode.
The automatic transmission can operate according to one of two emergency programs.
When the first emergency program is executed, automatic upshifting and downshifting occurs, but the shocks at the moment of shifting become more noticeable.
When the second emergency program is executed, automatic gear shifting is not carried out.
It is possible to manually control the gearbox, however, when the control lever is set to the positions «D», «3», «2» in fact, only 3rd gear will be engaged.
Lever positions «1» And «R» will, as usual, correspond to the inclusion of first gear or reverse gear.
When working on one of the emergency programs, the tempomat (Cruise control) turns off.
When switching to the emergency program, contact a workshop immediately.
Automatic transmission control lever locks
When the ignition is on, the automatic transmission control lever is locked in position «R» or «N». To move the control lever to another position, press the brake pedal. This control of the lever prevents erroneous engagement of the drive gear and spontaneous movement of the vehicle.
The retarder installed on the automatic transmission does not allow blocking the gearbox control lever if it is necessary to change abruptly from one gear to another through N, for example, from R to D. And only if the control lever is held for more than one second in position N with the brake pedal not pressed, the lever lock will turn on.
At speeds of approximately 5 km/h and above, the automatic transmission control lever, which is in position «N», automatically unlocked.
Locking the ignition key in the lock
After switching off the ignition, the key can only be removed from the lock if the automatic transmission control lever is in position «R» (parking lock). After removing the key from the lock, the lever is locked in this position.
Automatic transmission control lever positions
When the ignition is on, the actual position of the automatic transmission control lever is signaled by the indication on the dashboard. The illustration corresponds to setting the lever to position P.
P - parking lock
Drive wheels are blocked by means of rigid kinematic links. The parking lock position can only be used after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
To move the control lever to position P, you must first press it down. When switching from position R to position P, this is not necessary.
In order to move the automatic transmission control lever from position P after switching on the ignition, you need to depress the brake pedal and press the lever down.
Note: The automatic transmission control lever can only be moved out of the P position after the key inserted in the ignition lock is turned to position «On»
R - reverse
Reverse gear can only be engaged after the vehicle has stopped and the engine is running at idle speed. Before switching to position R, the automatic transmission control lever must be pressed down. When the ignition is on and the automatic transmission control lever is in position R, the reversing lights come on.
N - neutral position (idle position).
To move the automatic transmission control lever out of position N with the ignition on, at a vehicle speed of less than 5 km/h or when the vehicle is stationary, the brake pedal must be depressed.
O - the main position when moving forward.
Automatic upshifting and downshifting within the four gears of the box is carried out depending on the load on the engine, speed and driving mode.
In driving mode, under certain conditions, it is preferable to move the automatic transmission control lever to one of the following positions.
3 - position for driving on roads in hilly terrain.
This position is recommended for driving in conditions where when the automatic transmission control lever is in the main position D, there is frequent shifting from 4th gear to 3rd and vice versa.
1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are automatically engaged based on engine load, speed and driving mode. The possibility of turning on the fourth gear is blocked. This slightly increases the effect of engine braking when the accelerator pedal is released.
2 - position when driving in the mountains
This position of the automatic transmission control lever is suitable for overcoming long descents and ascents.
1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are automatically engaged based on engine load, speed and driving mode. The possibility of engaging 3rd and 4th gears is blocked. This avoids unnecessary upshifts and enhances the engine braking effect.
1 - position when overcoming steep slopes.
This position is recommended for climbing and descending extremely steep slopes.
To move the automatic transmission lever to position 1, it must first be pressed down. After switching on, the car will only move in first gear. The possibility of engaging 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears is blocked. This ensures the best possible engine braking effect.
When the lever is set to position 1, the cruise control cannot be used.
Note: Although it is possible to move the automatic transmission control lever to positions 3, 2, and 1 during manual downshifting, the automatic transmission will only shift after it becomes impossible to exceed the maximum allowable engine speed.
Predictive downshift (kick-down)
Automatic predictive downshifting allows you to realize the highest possible acceleration. If you fully depress the accelerator pedal, the automatic transmission will shift to a lower gear corresponding to the engine speed and speed at the time of the increase in fuel supply. Switching to the next, higher gear will occur only when the engine reaches the rotational speed corresponding to this gear.
Instructions for driving a car with automatic transmission
Engine starting
The engine can only be started when the automatic transmission control lever is in position P or N.
Activation of the desired operating range of the automatic transmission
To move the automatic transmission control lever to the desired operating position on a car with a running engine, you need to press the brake pedal. When moving the lever, do not press the accelerator pedal.
If the lever is unintentionally shifted to neutral while driving, release the throttle and wait for the rpm to fall to the appropriate idle speed before re-engaging the desired range of forward gears.
Attention: If the automatic transmission control lever is included in the forward gear range when the car is stationary, then in no case should you add gas (for example, by hand, acting in the engine compartment). In this case, the car will inevitably move, sometimes even if the parking brake is applied. Therefore, if it is necessary to carry out certain work with the engine idling, always move the automatic transmission control lever to the parking position and apply the parking brake.
Starting off
Move the control lever to the desired operating range (D, R, 3, 2, 1). Wait until the automation switches on, creating a power circuit of the gearbox with the drive wheels (at the moment of switching on, a slight push is felt). Only then add gas.
Stop
For short stops, such as at traffic lights, it is not necessary to switch to neutral. It is enough to hold the car with the brakes.
However, the engine should only run at idle speed
Parking
When stopping on level ground, it is enough to turn on the parking lock. If the road has a slope, then you should first tighten the hand brake, and then turn on the parking lock. This reduces the load on the locking mechanism and facilitates its subsequent disengagement.
Forced engine start
Forced start of the engine is not possible by towing or pushing Starting the engine in case of battery discharge is possible only from an external, auxiliary battery
Towing
When towing a vehicle with an automatic transmission using a cable, the gear lever must be in position N. The towing speed must not exceed 50 km/h. The maximum distance an automatic vehicle can be towed in this way is 50 km.
If it is necessary to tow a longer distance, the vehicle must be transported using the partial loading method with the front wheels raised. Transport with raised rear wheels is not permitted. In the case of driving with the rear wheels raised, the drive front wheels rotate in the opposite direction. At the same time, the planetary gears of an automatic transmission spin up to such a speed that the box instantly fails.
With regard to towing models AUDI 80 quattro, in this case, certain requirements must be observed.
The vehicle can be transported by partial loading with the front wheels raised. However, the speed of movement must not exceed 50 km/h, and the distance over which the car can be transported in this way must not exceed 50 km.
If these parameters are not observed, then the center differential will be damaged due to lack of lubrication.
If the vehicle is transported with the front wheels raised, the differential does not need to be locked in order for it to balance when cornering.
