Warning: Do not attempt to disassemble the suspension strut if a spring extractor has not been installed, if there is no extractor, contact a specialist for disassembly.
1. Install the spring extractor on the spring, then clamp the post in a vise.
2. Compress the spring until the upper spring retainer is released. Remove the castle nut from the top of the piston rod.
3. Remove the rack bearing, then the spring retainer.
4. Lift the coil spring off the strut along with the compressor. Mark the top of the spring. Note that the color code on the base of the spring surfaces faces outward.
5. Remove the rubber impact stop and boot. Heavy suspension models have an additional collar and washer. Before removing, note the position of each component.
6. To check the effectiveness of the shock absorber, push the piston rod all the way through, the resistance should be even and smooth, with no signs of jamming. On hydraulic shock absorbers, check for fluid leaks. On air springs, there is no easy way to find a leak.
7. The shock absorber can be replaced with a new cartridge, but the hydraulic piston and rod must be removed and drained.
8. To remove the shock cartridge or piston rod, unscrew the cap from the top of the strut using Audi #40-201 tool or equivalent.
9. Remove the cartridge or piston from the rack, completely clean the notch.
10. If applicable, guided by Chapter 5, remove the hub and bearing, mudguard.
11. Check for wear on the upper strut mount ball bearing by turning it quickly by hand to prepare a new bearing if necessary.
12. Assembly is carried out in the reverse order. Tighten the cap and castle nut with the tightening torque specified in the Specification. On heavy suspension models, make sure the rubber boot is on the cover. Before installing a new shock absorber, the piston rod must be moved several times in a vertical position for a full stroke.
