Warning: Do not attempt to disassemble the suspension strut unless a spring compressor has been installed. If a compressor is not available, contact a professional for disassembly.

1. Install the spring compressor on the spring, then clamp the strut in a vice.
2. Compress the spring until the upper spring retainer is released. Remove the castle nut from the top of the piston rod.
3. Remove the strut bearing, then the spring retainer.
4. Lift the coil spring off the stand with the compressor. Mark the top of the spring. Note that the color code on the base of the spring faces outward.
5. Remove the rubber shock stop and boot. On models with heavy suspension, there is an additional collar and washer. Note the position of each component before removing.
6. To check the effectiveness of the shock absorber, insert the piston rod fully to its full stroke, the resistance should be even and smooth, with no signs of sticking. On hydraulic shock absorbers, check for fluid leaks. On air shock absorbers, there is no easy way to detect a leak.
7. The shock absorber can be replaced with a new cartridge, however on a hydraulic one the piston and rod must be removed and the fluid drained.
8. To remove the shock absorber cartridge or piston rod, unscrew the cap from the top of the strut using Audi tool #40-201 or equivalent.
9. Remove the cartridge or piston from the stand, completely clean the recess.
10. If applicable, guided by Chapter 5, remove the hub and bearing, mudguard.
11. Check the wear of the upper strut mount ball bearing by quickly rotating it by hand, prepare a new bearing if necessary.
12. Reassemble in reverse order. Tighten the cover and castle nut to the tightening torque specified in the Specification. On models with heavy suspension, check that the rubber boot is placed on the cover. Before installing the new shock absorber, the piston rod must be moved vertically several times through its full stroke.
