Perform the following procedures at the intervals given in "Technical maintenance" at the beginning of the guide.
Checking and adjusting the power steering pump drive belt
1. Inspect the drive belt along its entire length to ensure there are no abrasions, wear or cracks.
2. Check that when you press with your thumb at the point midway between the two pulleys, the drive belt deflects approximately 10.0 mm.
3. If necessary, replace and/or adjust the drive belt as described in Chapter 21.
Checking the tie rod ends
4. Apply the handbrake, then lift the front of the car and support it on axle stands.
5. With the steering column unlocked, move each front wheel by hand and check for excessive play in the tie rod ends. There should be no lateral movement in the ball joint.
6. Check the condition of the rubber dust cap of the steering rod end.
7. If necessary, replace the tie rod end as described in Chapter 14.
Checking the lower ball joints of the front suspension
8. Apply the handbrake, then lift the front of the car and support it on axle stands.
9. Using a lever, attempt to move the wheel bearing housing sideways and up away from the lower control arm while watching the ball joint. There should be no visible movement.
10. Check both ball joints, replace as necessary.
Checking tires
11. Be guided Chapter 23. Originally installed tyres have tread wear indicators that become visible at 1.6mm.
12. Check and adjust tire pressures.
Checking the Power Steering Fluid Level
13. Set the front wheels straight.
14. With the engine idling, check that the fluid level is at the maximum mark. Top up if necessary. If frequent topping up is required, check for leaks in the system.
