Maintenance is essential for safety and desirable for better performance and economy of your vehicle. Over the years, the need for periodic lubrication has been greatly reduced. As a result, there is an unfortunate tendency among some owners to do no maintenance at all. This is certainly not acceptable; it is essential to perform regular visual inspections to identify any potential defects at an early stage before they result in costly repairs.

The following maintenance schedule is a list of the required maintenance and the intervals at which they should be performed. Where applicable, these procedures are described in more detail in the Manual in Chapter 2 of each Section.

Vehicles operated in adverse conditions (for example in extreme temperatures, daily towing of a trailer, or mainly over short distances) it is recommended to service more frequently than specified. If in doubt, consult your Audi dealer.

Weekly, or before a long trip


  • Check the engine oil level
  • Check the coolant level
  • Check tire pressures (cold), including the spare
  • Fill up the washer reservoir

Every 15,000 km


  • Replace engine oil and oil filter
  • Check the brake pads for wear

Every 12 months


  • Check for engine leaks
  • Check for leaks in the cooling system
  • Check the density of the antifreeze
  • Check idle speed and CO content
  • Check for leaks from the exhaust system
  • Check the condition of the clutch hydraulic line and leaks
  • Check the clutch fluid level
  • Check the condition of the gearbox and leaks
  • Check the fluid level in the automatic transmission and final drive
  • Check the rubber boots of the CV joint
  • Check the condition of the brake system hydraulic line and leaks
  • Check the wear of the rear brake shoe pads
  • Check the brake fluid level
  • Check the tie rod ends
  • Check the lower ball joints of the front suspension
  • Check your tires
  • Lubricate the door and hood hinges and locks
  • Check the lights and horn for proper operation
  • Check the windshield wiper and washer system, check the electrolyte level in the battery
  • Check the headlight adjustment




Every 24 months



Full 12 month schedule plus:
  • Replace the coolant
  • Replace brake fluid

Every 30,000 km


  • Check the tension of the water pump drive belt (4-cylinder engine)
  • Replace the fuel filter in the fuel line on carburetor engines
  • Replace the air filter element
  • Replace the spark plugs
  • Change the transmission fluid
  • Check the power steering fluid level
  • Check and adjust the power steering pump drive belt
  • Check and adjust the air conditioning compressor drive belt
  • Lubricate the hatch guides
  • Check the bottom seal
  • Check the alternator drive belt

Every 60,000 km


  • Replace the timing belt
