Front suspension - independent, struts with coil springs and lower suspension arms. Telescopic shock absorbers are attached to the struts, the lower suspension arms are mounted on the front crossmember.
The rear suspension is a torsion beam, with trailing arms attached to the underbody. Telescopic shock absorbers are attached to the cross beam, and include mountings for coil springs, forming a strut configuration. Lateral movement of the cross beam is controlled by a diagonal rod.
The steering is a rack and pinion type. Unlike the normal arrangement, only one end of the rack is used to move the steering rods from side to side. Models with direct steering are equipped with a hydraulic shock absorber, which compensates for unevenness of the road. A booster is installed on most models.
Procon-Ten protection system (Programmable compression/tension) can be fitted as an optional extra. It consists of two steel cables connected to the seat belt drums and the steering column tube. The cables run around the rear of the gearbox. In a severe frontal collision, the engine and gearbox are pushed back towards the passenger compartment. This causes the two cables to tighten, twisting the seat belt drums and pushing the steering column tube forward.
