To locate leaks:

1. Diesel engine: remove the lower engine cover, refer to Section Removal and installation the upper engine cover/lower engine compartment protection/subframe.

2. Clean the gearbox housing with cold cleaner.

3. Sprinkle potential leak areas with lime or talcum powder.

4. Drive the car. To make the oil liquid, drive on the highway for about 30 km.

Warning: The operation of lifting and installing the vehicle on stands is associated with danger! Therefore, before carrying out the operation, read Section Jacking and towing.

5. Raise and support the vehicle. Shine a light on the gearbox and check for leaks.

6. Fix leaks immediately.

7. Diesel engine: Install the lower engine cover, refer to Section Removal and installation the upper engine cover/lower engine compartment protection/subframe.

Checking and adding oil

Special tool:
  • Inspection pit or jack with supports.
  • To unscrew the plug to fill the system with oil, depending on the version:
  • 10mm Allen key, e.g. HAZET 985-10;
  • 16 mm socket wrench, such as HAZET 2567-16 or AUDI 3357.
  • A thin wire with a 1 cm long end bent at 90° for measuring the oil level.

1. Place the vehicle over an inspection pit or lift it horizontally onto supports.

2. Remove the lower engine cover, refer to Section Removal and installation the upper engine cover/lower engine compartment protection/subframe.

3. The oil filler plug is located on the gearbox in front of the left drive shaft and may be covered by the shaft heat shield. In this case, it is necessary to disconnect the heat shield.

4. Unscrew the oil filler plug using a 10 mm Allen key or a 3357 Allen key.

4. Unscrew the oil filler plug using a 10 mm Allen key or a 3357 Allen key.

5. Models with front-wheel drive and 012/01W gearbox: To check the oil level, use the above-described homemade pointer with a bent end. To check the level, hold the pointer horizontally in the hole, the bent end should point downwards. Remove the pointer and check the oil level using the pointer. The oil level is correct if it is 7 mm below the hole.

6. Models with 5-speed all-wheel drive (01A), as well as with 5- and 6-speed front-wheel drive (01E): The oil level should reach the lower edge of the hole for the screw plug.

7. Models with 6-speed 4WD (01E): The oil level should be 1±1 mm below the screw plug hole.

Warning: If the oil level is too low, check the box for leaks and repair if necessary (work of the service station). It is not enough to just fill the oil. It is necessary to maintain the specified oil level! Under no circumstances should you overfill the oil.

8. If the gearbox is sealed, fill with oil. Tighten the plug to the specified Specifications moment.

9. Secure the heat shield to the gearbox if it was removed.

10. Reinstall the engine compartment cover, refer to Section Removal and installation the upper engine cover/lower engine compartment protection/subframe.

Rear axle differential, quattro models

Rear axle differential, quattro models

The differential oil level is checked by unscrewing the oil filler plug (arrow). The oil level should reach the lower edge of the threaded hole.

Tighten the plug to the specified torque Specifications moment.
