General information
1. Angry belt drives alternator, coolant pump, viscous fan clutch and power steering pump (power steering). If air conditioning is installed, the second belt from the crankshaft pulley drives the air conditioning compressor. Both belts are poly V-type (pic. 6.1).
2. The tension of the main belt is automatic, with a spring-loaded roller. If air conditioning is provided, the belt tension is made with a torque wrench.
3. To remove the drive belts. apply the handbrake, raise the front of the vehicle and install the jack stands. Remove the bottom protective casing of the power unit.
Withdrawal
4. If the belt is to be installed backwards, mark it in the direction of rotation.
5. Although not absolutely necessary, access can be improved by sliding the entire front panel (together with hood lock bracket assembly) forward of the engine as far as possible. Do not disconnect the radiator hoses and electrical wiring. To do this, first remove the front bumper as described in chapter 11, unscrew the three quick-release clips from the soundproofing panel, dismantle the air duct between the lock bracket and the air filter. To the left of the radiator, disconnect the wiring from the mounts. Unscrew the bolts securing the lock bracket and body side member, unscrew the upper bolts that are behind the headlights. Together with an assistant, take the entire assembly as far away from the car as possible. At the same time, Audi mechanics use special brackets, however, you can make homemade ones from pieces of threaded rod by screwing them into the side members.
6. On A/C models, loosen the tensioner bolts and move the pulley up to loosen the belt. Pull the belt off the crankshaft, compressor and tensioner pulleys.
7. To remove the main belt, first mark its position on the pulleys so that it is correctly installed back. Pay particular attention to the way the belt is laid around the viscous pulley. The auto-tensioner can be released with a 15mm ring wrench on the center bolt. Turn the bolt counterclockwise to loosen the tension. Remove the belt from the tensioner, alternator, viscous coupling. power steering pump and crankshaft pulleys.
Note: The bolt is left-hand threaded so turning it counterclockwise will not loosen it. Release the tensioner after removing the belt.
Installation
8. Lay the belt on the alternator pulley, fan viscous coupling, power steering pump and crankshaft pulleys. Make sure that all the grooves of the belt match the grooves of the pulleys. Turn the tensioner counterclockwise and place the belt on the pulley, then release the tensioner.
9. Not models with air conditioning, lay the belt on the compressor and crankshaft pulleys, aligning the grooves of the belt with the grooves of the pulleys. Take the tensioner down and lay the belt on its pulley, aligning the grooves with the streams. Tension the belt by applying a force of 25 Nm to the hexagon on the tensioner housing. Hold this moment until the adjusting and axle bolts are tightened.
