In the FRG, vehicles with adjusted catalytic converters require a first exhaust gas check three years after the date of first approval and every two years thereafter, while also checking the ignition setting and the efficiency of the catalytic converter. If Audi is to «main check» DEKRA or TUV, the exhaust gas composition should be checked first. In our experience, this is done most quickly in certified workshops. To save time, you can add that the Audi workshop always has the latest installation data available, which other workshops, including DEKRA or TUV, receive with a certain delay.
When checking, the exhaust system must be in working order, and there must be no air leaks in the intake manifold through leaky areas. Also, make sure the air filter is clean and the spark plug electrode spacing is correct. In addition, after driving for several months for short distances, it is recommended to change the oil. Fuel condensate that has penetrated into the engine oil worsens the performance of exhaust gases.
During the test, the car is connected to an expensive tester in the workshop, the printing device of which summarizes the measured values obtained to confirm the passed test. If the individual setpoints are not reached, there is no confirmation of the passed test. Before replacing an expensive assembly after a failed exhaust gas test, have the test repeated at another workshop. Despite expensive measuring equipment, there is a spread in the measurement results. Sometimes a long trip is sufficient, during which the engine, lambda probe and catalytic converter reach full operating temperature.
