Execution order
1. Inspect the engine from top to bottom.
2. Slightly oily areas are not a cause for concern - all engines "sweat" a little grease from time to time.
3. But the reason for the appearance of oil stains under a parked car and obvious oiling should be studied.
4. Wash the engine with a special detergent and a steam jet.
5. After a test drive of several kilometers, check if oil comes out.
Possible leak locations
Here we have listed the places where oil can leak in an Audi engine:
- Crankshaft, camshaft and intermediate shaft gaskets in a four-cylinder engine. These areas are covered by the timing belt cover.
- Cylinder head cover gaskets.
- Cylinder head gasket.
- Oil pressure switch.
- Oil filter gasket.
- Oil cooler gasket (behind the filter).
- Crankcase gasket.
- Gasket behind the crankshaft (oil leaks from the engine and gearbox housing connector).
Tip: You can wash your engine inexpensively at so-called self-service steam jet car washes. If the engine is heavily soiled, it is recommended to spray it with a special cleaning agent first and wait a little while for it to work. Be sure to bring work clothes!
Running in a new engine
During the first 1000 km, the sliding parts of the engine (pistons and cylinders, plain bearings and shafts) must "grind" against each other. This should happen at low loads, i.e. at low speed. The engine's future power and service life depend on this. Therefore:
1. Don't give it full throttle; with automatic transmission avoid full throttle and full throttle position. Maximum speed: 4200 rpm!
2. Raise the revs only when the engine is warm and up to the specified 4200 rpm; in cold weather, shift earlier.
3. When driving from 1000 to 1500 km, gradually accelerate the engine to maximum speed or to the maximum permissible rpm.
Tip: What has been said here regarding a new engine also applies to a reconditioned power unit, which – from experience – reacts sensitively to an incorrect driving style.
