Table of contents: Execution order ↓ Tread pattern ↓
Execution order
1. Turn each wheel completely once.
2. Remove foreign bodies, such as small stones, with a narrow screwdriver, being careful not to damage the tire profile.
3. The tyre profile, according to the 1992 law, must be at least 1.6 mm deep across the entire tread width.
4. But for safety reasons, you need to change your tires when the remaining profile width reaches 3 mm, since the wide-profile tires of the Audi A4 float on wet roads earlier than the narrow tires of older models.
5. To check the wear, use elevations that pass at equal distances across the working surface in the grooves of the profile. They are marked on the sides of the tires with the letters "TWI" (Tread Wear Indicator).
6. If these bulges are at the same height as the tread pattern, then the tire has a residual depth of 1.6 mm - you need to change the tires immediately.
7. Based on the nature of the profile wear, we can draw some conclusions, which are described in the next section.
Tread pattern
1. Front tires that are worn on the outside are not unusual for Audi. The reason is the increased load on this area of the tread during cornering.
2. A profile worn on one side may indicate incorrect wheel balancing; especially when one tire is worn diagonally.
3. Strong wear of the middle of the profile can also be a sign of too high pressure. This effect is especially pronounced on the rear wheels. Or it occurs when driving too fast, which rounds the tread surface.
4. If both outer shoulders of one tire are worn more than the middle of the profile, this means that the car has been driven for a long time with too low tire pressure.
5. Uniform erosion in the profile indicates a defective shock absorber.
6. If uneven wear appears in certain areas, this means that the wheel is unbalanced or the tire is damaged.
Tip: If you need to remove a working wheel, for example, to check the brake, you should first mark the position of the wheel relative to the hub. Otherwise, the balance will be disturbed after installation. Next, you should pay attention to the fact that the brake disc does not rotate on the wheel hub.
