The pistons displace the brake fluid contained there. The pressure thus generated in the brake system is transferred to the brake cylinders via pipes and hoses.
In them, the pistons press the brake pads against the brake discs.
Fluid pressure is transmitted by two independent piping systems (brake circuits), and for one front wheel and the opposite rear wheel (diagonally divided dual-circuit braking system).
If one brake circuit fails, despite this, two wheels are still braked.
The handbrake acts on the rear wheels by means of cable rods and mechanically presses the pads against the brake discs.
All models of the Audi A4 have been equipped with anti-lock wheels as standard since the start of the series. ABS is discussed in more detail in the next chapter.
Tip: If one brake circuit fails, then you must press the brake pedal much harder (the free travel of the brake pedal also becomes longer) in order to achieve a braking effect. The braking distance is also lengthened.
