Checking and setting the free travel of the back-up valve (K-, K-Jetromic, KE-Jetromic)

If the engine does not start or starts poorly, the cause may be an incorrectly installed booster valve.

Free play is the clearance between the control piston and the adjusting lever -right arrow-, measured from the side of the support valve closest to the fuel distributor.

Examination

Check CO content and idle speed, adjust if necessary. The required value corresponds to the basic setting of the adjusting lever.

Remove the air supply casing.

Turn on the starter for 10 seconds or press the auxiliary fuel pump control button.

Raise the damper slightly until resistance is felt.
  • 4-cylinder engine: free play should be min 0.5 - max 3.0 mm, which corresponds to the edge of the cone.
  • 5-cylinder engine: the free play should be noticeable and should reach a maximum of the edge of the diffuser cone, which corresponds to 2.1 mm.

Otherwise, remove the fuel metering unit and adjust the free travel of the control piston stop screw using HAZET tool 2566.

Caution: The system is under pressure. Release the pressure before removing the fuel dispenser.

The distance between the stop screw and the flange of the hexagon nut should be a = 0.6 mm.

By screwing in the stop screw of the control piston, the free travel of the damper increases; by turning it out, it decreases.

Turning the screw by ¼ turn changes the amount of free travel of the valve by 0.3 mm.

Check idle speed adjustment.
