Attention: Starting from 1.88 (#89JA221810 or #89JA225957) used brake caliper with a piston diameter of 38 mm (before 36 mm). The hallmark is the mark "38" stamped on the caliper. It should be noted that calipers of the same design must be used on the same axle (piston diameter).
Withdrawal
Loosen the rear wheel bolts, raise the rear of the car, remove the wheels.
Attention: If the same pads will be installed, they must be marked. Swapping pads from inside to outside and vice versa or to the right or vice versa is unacceptable. Swapping can cause uneven braking. The use of original VW/AUDI pads is recommended. It is imperative to replace all front pads at the same time, even if only one of the pads has reached the wear limit.
Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the caliper housing, holding the guide bolt from turning. Remove the piston housing and hang it on a wire. Do not disconnect the brake hose, otherwise you will have to remove air from the system.
Take out the brake pads.
Installation
Attention: Do not press the brake pedal when the pads are removed, otherwise the pistons will come out of the housing.
Clean the guide surfaces and the pad seating in the body shaft with a suitable soft metal brush or clean with a cloth soaked in alcohol. Do not use any solvents containing mineral oils or sharp instruments.
Before installing the pads, check with your fingers for grooves on the brake disc. If necessary, disc brakes can be turned (workshop work), if they are thick enough.
Measure the thickness of the brake discs.
Check the piston boot for breaks. Replace a damaged boot immediately, as penetrating dirt will quickly lead to loss of tightness of the caliper. This requires disassembly of the caliper (workshop work).
Screw in the piston with a bar wrench, turning it to the right and pressing it hard.
Attention: Wrap the piston with a diameter of 38 mm with a special key VAG 3131, if there is no special key, insert a metal plate into both grooves of the piston and wrap the piston. The piston must not be installed with a removal key, otherwise the automatic installation system in the caliper will be destroyed.
Attention: When the piston is depressed, the brake fluid is squeezed out of the brake cylinders into the reservoir. Check the fluid level in the reservoir and, if necessary, suck out the brake fluid.
When suctioning, use a plastic bottle, which should only be used for brake fluid. Do not use drink bottles! Brake fluid is poisonous and must never be sucked out through a hose by mouth. Apply suction. After replacing the pads, the brake fluid level in the reservoir should not exceed the MAX mark, as the fluid expands when heated. Leaking brake fluid flows onto the brake master cylinder, destroying paint and causing corrosion.
Insert both pads into the brake housing. At the same time, make sure that the lower springs are straight up and parallel to the upper edge of the brake linings.
Insert the piston housing and secure with new self-locking bolts to 35 Nm while holding the guide bolt.
Attention: In each original repair kit "brake pads" VW/AUDI comes with a hex bolt for each caliper. This bolt must be used.
Make a basic rear brake adjustment.
Screw on the wheel, lower the vehicle, tighten the wheel bolts crosswise to 110 Nm.
Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir, top up if necessary to the MAX mark.
