A basic adjustment should be made after each brake pad replacement.
Raise the car.
Release the handbrake.
Examination

Press the handbrake cable lever all the way down with a screwdriver. If the opposite caliper lever is pulled back all the way, the handbrake cable is too tight.

Note: The brake caliper is shown removed in the lower picture only to better illustrate the stop.
Adjustment

Loosen the handbrake cable adjusting nut until both levers touch the stops.
Insert a screwdriver with a diameter of at least 6 mm between the rear end of the brake force regulator spring and the roller.
press the brake pedal 40 times with the engine not running.
Note: Starting from 1.86 (Nb 89JA221810 or 89JA25957) a brake caliper with a piston diameter of 38 mm is installed (previously 36 mm). The distinguishing feature is the number "38" stamped on the caliper. For cars with a piston diameter of 38 mm, press the brake pedal once to install.

Finally, check whether both wheels turn freely
Remove the screwdriver.
