Raise the car.
Release the handbrake.
Examination
Use a screwdriver to press the lever of the handbrake cable to the stop. If at the same time the lever of the opposite caliper is pulled back to the stop, then the handbrake cable is too tight.
Attention: The brake caliper is shown in the lower picture in the removed state only for the best image of the stop.
Adjustment
Loosen the handbrake cable adjusting nut until both levers rest against the stops.
Insert a screwdriver with a minimum diameter of 6 mm between the rear end of the brake force regulator spring and the roller.
Depress the brake pedal 40 times with the engine off.
Attention: Starting about 1.86 (Nb 89JA221810 or 89JA25957) a brake caliper with a piston diameter of 38 mm is installed (earlier 36 mm). The hallmark is the number "38" stamped on the caliper. On vehicles with a piston diameter of 38 mm, press the brake pedal once to install.
Finally, check that both wheels turn freely
Take out the screwdriver.
