Table of contents: Thermostat ↓ Radiator ↓ Water pump ↓ Generator drive belt ↓ Expansion tank ↓ Electric fan ↓ Coolant ↓
The engine uses a liquid cooling system with forced circulation. The cooling system includes an engine water jacket, a radiator, an expansion tank, a centrifugal water pump, a thermostat and an electric fan. The YP engine cooling system does not include an expansion tank.

Thermostat

The thermostat is attached to the bottom of the water pump housing.

Temperature of the main valve opening start,°C: 90 (85)*.

Temperature of full opening of the main valve,°C: 102 (105).

Main valve piston stroke, mm: 7

*Since model year 1982.

Radiator

Engine model YP

The radiator is front-mounted, with aluminum plates and side plastic tanks. The radiator cap contains a low-pressure air valve and an excess-pressure valve.

Opening pressure of the excess pressure valve, kg/cm²: 1.20-1.35.

Engines of other models

The radiator is located at the front, with a tubular copper core and side plastic tanks.

Water pump

The water pump is installed in the front part on the left in the cylinder block. It is driven by a V-belt simultaneously with the generator. The design of the water pump is non-disassemblable and cannot be repaired.

Generator drive belt

The belt tension is considered normal if the belt deflection when pressing hard with the thumb (with a force of 5 kgf) on the middle of the belt branch between the crankshaft and generator pulleys is about 15 mm.

Expansion tank

Opening pressure of the pressure reducing valve in the tank cap, kg/cm²: 1.2-1.5.

Electric fan

The fan motor is switched on and off by the fan switch located on the left radiator tank.

Electric fan brand: Bosch or AEG.

Fan motor switch-on temperature,°C: 93-98.

Fan motor switch-off temperature,°C: 88-93.

Coolant

Capacity of engine cooling and cabin heating systems, l:
  • engine YP: 6.2,
  • engines of other models: 6.0.

The coolant used is a mixture of distilled water and G10 antifreeze in a ratio of 60% and 40% (at temperatures down to -25°C).

Replacement frequency: every two years of operation.
