Choosing the right transmission ratio (switching to high and low ranges of motion) is carried out fully automatically, according to the movement programs stored in the memory "Dynamic control program".
The gearbox is also equipped with a tiptronic system. This system will give the driver, if desired, the ability to manually switch ranges.
Please note that on your vehicle with a multitronic transmission, the engine is connected to the drive wheels, unlike a conventional automatic transmission, through a multi-plate clutch, and not through a torque converter. As a result, the vehicle is slightly less prone to spontaneous movement during short stops with the engine idling and set to "D" or "R" control lever. This should be remembered first of all on slopes/climbs if you have previously driven a car with a conventional automatic transmission with a torque converter and are not yet familiar with this feature of the CVT.
Multitronic ® Operating Instructions
The gear ratio changes continuously.
Starting off
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Holding down the lock button (on the control lever), move the control lever to position D and release the lock button.
- Wait until the automation switches on, creating a power circuit of the gearbox with the drive wheels (at the moment of switching on, a slight push is felt).
- Release the brake pedal and depress the accelerator pedal.
Short stops
- Stop the car with the brake pedal.
- Press and hold the brake pedal (like traffic lights) in such a way as to exclude spontaneous movement of the car forward or backward at idle.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal while doing this.
- To start from a standstill on slopes, in order to avoid spontaneous movement of the car, tighten the hand brake.
Parking
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Apply the parking brake fully.
- While holding down the lock button, set the control lever to the position "R" and release the lock button.
The engine can only be started when the control lever is in position "R" or "N".
When parking on level ground, it is enough to set the control lever to the position "R". With a significant slope of the road, first apply the parking brake fully and only then move the control lever to the position "R". This reduces the load on the locking mechanism and makes it easier to move the control lever from the position "R".
Attention. Remember that during short stops with the control lever in the position "D" or "R" the kinematic bottom of the engine with wheels does not completely disappear. Therefore, when stopping, hold the vehicle with the brake pedal accordingly, and when starting off, use the parking brake as an aid to prevent the vehicle from moving unintentionally - risk of accident!
Lever positions
This section describes each control lever position.
A dedicated indication of the actual position of the control lever is displayed on the displays of the instrument cluster.
P - parking lock
In this position, the drive wheels are blocked mechanically. The parking lock may only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary.
To set the control lever to the position "R" and its pulling out of this position, press the lock button (on the control lever) and the brake pedal at the same time.
R - reverse gear
When reverse gear is engaged, the transmission automatically selects the lowest gear ratio.
Reverse gear may only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling.
To set the control lever to the position "R" press the lock button and the brake pedal at the same time. With the ignition on and the control lever in position "R" reversing lights are on.
N - neutral position (idle position)
This position is the idle position.
D - the main position for moving forward
In this position, the transmission automatically selects the optimal gear ratio. Gear ratio dependent on motor load, speed and dynamic control program (DRP).
To move the control lever from position "N" into position "D" at a speed of less than 5 km / h or a stationary car, you must press the brake pedal.
In order to be able to manually adjust the gear ratio to the driving conditions, under certain circumstances, (e.g. when driving in mountains or with a trailer) it may be preferable to temporarily switch to tiptronic mode.
Control lever lock
The locking of the control lever prevents inadvertent switching on of the range of motion and thus spontaneous movement of the vehicle from a standstill.
The blocking is canceled as follows:
- Turn on the ignition.
- Depress the brake pedal and hold down the lock button at the same time.
Automatic control lever lock
When the ignition is on, the control lever is locked in the position "R" And "N". To move it out of these positions, press the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, when the control lever is in the positions "R" And "N" the following appears in the display of the instrument cluster:
Beim Einlegen elner "Fahrstufe im Stand Fussbremso betatigen" (when selecting the driving mode of a stationary vehicle, press the brake pedal).
In addition, the automatic control lever lock symbol will illuminate on the control lever gate.
At a speed of approximately 5 km/h and above, the control lever lock is automatically canceled in the position "N".
With fast (without pause) moving the control lever through the position "N" (for example, from the position "R" into position "D") control lever is not blocked. This will give, for example, the possibility of movement "swinging" stuck car. If the control lever with the brake pedal released is more than 1 s in the position "N", then it is blocked.
Lock button
The control lever lock button prevents the control lever from being accidentally moved to certain positions. Pressing this button releases the control lever.
Key lock in the ignition
After switching off the ignition, the key can only be removed from the lock when the control lever is in the position "R" (parking lock). After removing the key from the lock, the lever is locked in position "R".
Kick-down device
The Kick-down device allows you to realize maximum acceleration.
When the accelerator pedal is pressed sharply with the transition of the resistance point, the automation switches, depending on the speed and speed, to a lower range. Switching to the next increased range occurs immediately upon reaching the maximum engine speed corresponding to this range.
Dynamic control program (DRP)
The multi-tronic® transmission is controlled electronically.
The transmission is controlled electronically. Switching to higher and lower ranges is carried out according to the movement programs stored in memory.
With a restrained driving style, the automation selects an economical shift program.
When driving in a temperamental manner with sudden acceleration and frequent speed changes, using the maximum speed or after sharply depressing the accelerator pedal (Kick-down) the transmission shifts to a sportier program range.
The choice of the optimal traffic program for specific conditions is a continuous process. However, regardless of this, it is possible to switch to a more sporty program by pressing the accelerator pedal sharply. This engages a lower transmission ratio to match the actual road speed, enabling dynamic acceleration (for example, when overtaking) without the need to sharply press the accelerator pedal all the way. When switching to a higher range and the corresponding driving mode, the operation according to the original program is restored.
When driving on mountain roads, the gear ratio is continuously adapted to the uphill characteristic. By depressing the brake pedal while driving downhill, the transmission automatically switches to a lower range. As a result, the efficiency of engine braking is improved.
If the speed control system is activated when driving on mountain roads, the transmission automatically selects a lower gear ratio to maintain the set speed. This, however, leads to an increase in the engine speed.
Tiptronic mode of cars with multitronic ®
Manual switching program (tiptronic) gives the driver the ability to manually engage six programmed gear ratios (ranges of motion).
Switching to manual mode
- Pull the control lever out of position "D" to the right. When manual mode is activated, the display shows "6 5 4 3 2 1" highlighting the currently enabled range of motion.
Switching to higher ranges
- When moving the control lever forward (in tiptronic position) switching to higher ranges (+).
Downshifting
- When moving the control lever back (in tiptronic position) switching to lower ranges (-).
The manual shift program allows manual engagement of six programmed gear ratios (ranges of motion). You can switch to manual mode both during parking and while driving from the position "D".
When accelerating in ranges 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, the transmission will automatically shift to the next higher range shortly before reaching maximum engine speed.
When switching from a high range to a low range, the automation will switch only after it becomes impossible to increase the engine speed.
When the speed drops (e.g. when braking) and minimum engine speed, the transmission will automatically shift to the next lower range.
Downshifting when driving downhill improves engine braking performance.
When the kick-down device is operated, the transmission shifts to the next lower range depending on the speed and engine speed.
Emergency program
In the event of a system malfunction, the automation switches to an emergency program
In the event of a system malfunction, the automation switches to an emergency program. This is signaled by the lighting of all segments on the display panel at once.
Reverse indication
When the indication is lit in negative font (reverse font) you can keep moving. However, contact Audi as soon as possible to have the multitronic ® checked.
Flashing indication
A flashing light indicates a serious system problem. In this case, drive carefully to the nearest Audi plant to have the problem rectified.
Steering wheel tiptronic
Vehicle with multitronic ® and tiptronic steering wheel
gear ratios (ranges of motion) can be switched using the steering wheel buttons.
Switching to higher ranges
- Press the top side of one of the keys (+).
Downshifting
- Press the bottom side of one of the keys (-).
The range keys on the steering wheel are active when the control lever is in the "D" or manual switching program (tiptronic).
Of course, manual range switching is also possible using the control lever in the center console.
