In severe side collisions, side and head airbags reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the impact zone.
The airbag system is not a replacement for the seat belt, but is part of the vehicle's overall passive safety concept. You should always keep in mind that the maximum protective effect of the airbag system is only achieved when interacting with fastened seat belts. Therefore, always fasten your seat belts, not only because of the requirements of traffic rules, but also for safety.
The seat belts, along with their traditional protective function, must hold the driver and front passenger in such a position in the event of an accident so that the airbags can deploy correctly and provide additional protection.
The readiness of the function of the cushion system is controlled electronically and displayed using a warning lamp "AIRBAG".
The following indicates a system malfunction:
- when the ignition is turned on, the control lamp does not light up,
- the control lamp does not go out after about 3 seconds after the ignition is switched on,
- after the ignition is switched on, the control lamp goes out and lights up again,
- the control lamp lights up or flashes while driving.
Attention
- The protective action of the airbag system is only enough for one accident. After a single operation, the system must be replaced.
- Not more than 14 years after the date of manufacture, the airbag system must be replaced with a new one by a specialist company.
The airbag system does not deploy in the following cases:
- with the ignition off
- in light frontal collisions
- in light side collisions
- when hitting from behind
- when the vehicle rolls over
Front airbags
The driver's front airbag is located in the steering wheel trim panel. The front passenger airbag is located above the glove box on the right side of the instrument panel. The location of the pillows is indicated by the inscription "AIRBAG".
In dangerous frontal collisions, the front airbag system, together with three-point seat belts, provide additional protection to the head and chest area of the driver and front passenger.
The seat belts, in addition to their traditional protective function, must hold the driver and front passenger in such a position in the event of a frontal collision so that the airbag deploys correctly and provides additional protection.
The airbag system is designed to deploy the driver's and front passenger's airbags in the event of a dangerous frontal collision. In special emergency situations, both front and head and side airbags can work.
When the system is activated, the airbags are filled with working gas and opened in front of the driver and front passenger. The airbags inflate in hundredths of a second and at high speed in order to provide additional protection in the event of an accident. Contact with a fully inflated airbag dampens the forward motion of the driver and front passenger and reduces the risk of injury to the head and upper body.
The specially designed inflatable cushion design provides for a controlled release of the working gas under the influence of the driver or passenger in order to soften the reception of the head and torso. As a result, the airbag deflates after it has been deployed, and as a result, the forward view is again freed.
Attention
- The driver and front passenger must maintain a minimum distance of 25 cm from the steering wheel/dashboard. Otherwise, the cushion system will not protect you - danger to life! In addition, the front seats and head restraints must always be adjusted exactly to height.
- There should be no other persons, animals or objects between the seated in front and the airbag coverage area.
- The steering wheel trim panel and the surface of the airbag module in the front passenger instrument panel must not be pasted over, cloth-covered or otherwise treated. Wipe only with a dry or damp cloth. It is also not allowed to attach any objects to the skin of the airbag modules, for example, cup holders, phone holder.
Side airbags
The side airbags are located in the backrests of the front and side rear seats. The location of the pillows is indicated by the inscription "AIRBAG".
In dangerous side collisions, the side airbag system, together with the three-point seat belts, provide additional protection for the entire upper torso (chest, abdomen and pelvis) driver and passengers.
In dangerous side collisions, the side airbags reduce the risk of injury from the doors. Seat belts, in addition to their traditional protective function, must, in the event of a side collision, keep the occupants in a position in the car so that the airbag deploys correctly and provides additional protection.
When the side airbags are deployed, the headbags always inflate on the respective side in order to improve the protection of the occupants (SIDEGUARD).
In the event of dangerous side collisions, the side airbag on the respective side of the vehicle is deployed.
In special emergency situations, both the front, head and side airbags may deploy.
When the system is triggered, the airbags are filled with working gas.
The airbags inflate in hundredths of a second and at high speed to provide additional protection in the event of an accident. When the pillow is inflated, fine dust is generated. The ego is normal and does not indicate a car fire.
Contact with a fully inflated airbag dampens occupant movement and reduces the risk of injury to the entire upper torso (chest, abdomen and pelvis) from the door side.
Attention
- Your head should never be in the area where the side airbags exit. Otherwise, you could be seriously injured in an accident. This applies in particular to children who are not transported in an appropriate child seat.
- Covers or upholstery that have not been specifically approved for use on Audi seats with side airbags must not be used under any circumstances. The cushion opens from the back of the seat. Therefore, the protective function of your side air bag is significantly impaired if the covers or upholstery of the seats are not coordinated.
Note. When the front passenger airbag is deactivated, the passenger's side airbag is also deactivated.
Head pillows (SIDEGUARDS)
Head cushions are located on both sides of the cabin above the doors. The location is marked "AIRBAG".
In dangerous side collisions, the head airbag system, together with three-point belts and side airbags, provides additional protection to the head and neck area of the driver and passengers. Seat belts, in addition to their traditional protective function, must, in the event of a side collision, keep the occupants in a position in the car so that the airbag deploys correctly and provides additional protection.
Together with other structural components (e.g. seat cross braces, stable vehicle structure) SIDEGUARD is a consistent improvement in occupant protection in side impacts.
Deactivating airbags
Deactivation of the airbags is provided only in certain cases, for example:
- if it is necessary, in exceptional cases, to install a child seat on the front passenger seat, in which the child is positioned with his back in the direction of travel.
- if, in spite of a correctly installed driver's seat, the minimum distance is not maintained (25 cm) between the center of the steering wheel and the sternum.
- if it is necessary to install special devices in the steering wheel area in case of physical disabilities,
- when installing other seats (e.g. orthopedic seats without side airbags).
Airbag system control
- Each time the ignition is switched on, the control lamp comes on for a few seconds "AIRBAG".
- With at least one airbag switched off, the warning lamp flashes for about 12 seconds, after which it goes out.
Deactivating the front passenger airbag when installing a child seat
Deactivate the front passenger airbag if it is necessary in exceptional cases to install a child seat on the front passenger seat, in which the child is positioned with his back in the direction of travel.
However, we recommend that you mount the child seat only on the rear seat to keep the front passenger airbag active.
Vehicle with front passenger airbag switch
The front passenger airbag deactivation switch is located in the glove box.
- To deactivate the front passenger airbag, turn the car key to position 0.
- The airbag is activated by turning the key to position 1.
The front passenger airbag turned off by you with the key switch is reminded by the constant burning of the signal lamp "PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF". Please also follow the indication of the control lamp "AIRBAG" in the instrument cluster.
Note
- The front passenger airbag turned off by you with the key switch is reminded by the constant burning of the signal lamp "PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF".
- When the front passenger airbag is deactivated, the side airbag on the front passenger's side is also deactivated. All other airbags in the vehicle are operational.
