Manual transmission
Note! As part of maintenance, it is only necessary to check the oil level in the gearbox. Changing the transmission oil is not required.
Checking the level
1. Jack up the car and place it on jack stands.
2. Unscrew the filler plug on the gearbox housing (see arrow in illustration). The plug can be covered with a heat-reflecting shield.
10.2. Unscrew the threaded plug of the filler hole on the gearbox housing (see arrow)
3. Use a bent wire pin, one end of which is approximately 1 cm long and bent at an angle of 90°, and check the oil level in the gearbox. Keep the pin in the hole strictly horizontally, and the bent end should be turned downwards. The transmission oil level is normal if it is 1 mm below the filler hole.
Attention! If the check reveals that there is little oil in the gearbox, the gearbox should be inspected for leaks and oil leaks. If necessary, contact a workshop to repair the gearbox.
4. Add gearbox oil if necessary. The manufacturer recommends using synthetic transmission oil SAE 75W90, Audi specification G 052 911 A.
5. Screw the threaded plug into the filler hole and tighten it to 40 Nm.
6. Install the heat shield, if provided.
7. Lower the car onto its wheels.
Automatic transmission
Recommended transmission oil - SAE 75W90 specification Audi G 052 145.
Checking the level
8. Warm up the oil in the final drive to 60°C by making a short trip.
9. Jack up the car, place it horizontally on stands and remove the engine splash guard.
10. Unscrew the filler plug (see arrow in illustration) and check the oil level. Its level should be level with the lower edge of the filler hole.
10.10. Unscrew the filler plug (see arrow) and check the oil level
11. Replace the old sealing ring on the filler plug and screw in the plug, tightening it to 30 Nm.
Attention! If, when checking the oil level in the main gear, it turns out that the oil level is low or high, then, as a rule, the cause is a defect in the planetary gear, as a result of which there is a communication of oil in the gearbox and in the main gear. In this case, you should contact the workshop and find out and fix the malfunction there.
Gearbox - visual inspection for leaks
Leaks may occur in the following places:
- at the junction between the cylinder block and the gearbox;
- at the junction of the gearbox and drive shafts;
- on the oil filler plug;
- on the threaded drain plug.
If the gearbox has leaks and is oily, then to detect the leak, you must do the following:
12. Clean the gearbox housing.
13. Sprinkle lime or talc on suspected leak areas.
14. Perform a test drive. Since the oil becomes more fluid when the engine heats up and leaks faster in places where the seal is broken, the test drive should be about 30 km long.
15. Jack up the car and place it on jack stands.
16. Inspect the gearbox using a flashlight and locate any leaks.
17. Fix any leaks and add oil to the gearbox.
