  • Coolant — Checking the Level
            0
Insufficient coolant level is indicated by a light on the instrument panel. However, the coolant level should be checked before each long trip.

Caution! When the engine is hot, place a thick cloth on the radiator filler cap before removing it to avoid being burned by hot coolant or steam. Remove the cap only at a temperature of +90°C.

The coolant level with a cold engine (coolant temperature about +20°C) should be between the maximum MAX and minimum MIN marks on the expansion tank. With a warm engine, the fluid level may rise slightly above the maximum MAX mark.

Checking the coolant level should be done with the engine off.

To avoid engine damage, add large quantities of cold coolant only when the engine is cold.

Unscrew the expansion tank cap slightly to release any excess pressure, then unscrew the cap completely and remove it.

If the fluid level drops significantly within a short period of time, inspect the system to check for leaks.

Cooling system - visual inspection for leaks

1. Check the condition of the hoses by squeezing and bending them and make sure there are no porosity. Replace hardened or swollen hoses.

The coolant circulation hoses must not fit too shallowly on the connecting fittings.

2. Check the strength of the hose clamps. Replace the clamps with new ones if necessary.

3. Check the condition of the expansion tank cap sealing gasket and make sure it is not damaged.

Caution: Too low a coolant level may be caused by incorrectly screwed cap.

Significant losses of coolant and (or) the presence of oil in it, as well as a white exhaust gas outlet when the engine is hot, indicate a defect in the cylinder head gasket.

Attention! It is sometimes difficult to find the leak location. In this case, you should contact a workshop, which has a special device for this purpose, with the help of which the system is tested under pressure. At the same time, the mentioned device can also be used to check the safety valve of the expansion tank cap.
