The Audi A4 service intervals depend on the number of kilometers traveled and the date of the last inspection. If it is necessary to perform maintenance or change the oil, the corresponding information appears on the display. This information is displayed for one minute after the ignition is turned on and after the engine is started.
Two types of messages are displayed: "service OIL" for oil change and "service INSP" in case of a routine inspection. After servicing, the routine maintenance indicator must be reset to zero (in the workshop).
Audi recommends changing the oil every 12 months or every 15 thousand km. In case of severe operating conditions (mostly short distance trips, dusty roads) oil changes should be made more frequently. Inspection should be performed in accordance with the next maintenance indicator, as well as every 30 thousand km, regardless of the indicator readings.
For Audi models produced since 2000, the Longlife maintenance system has also been introduced. With careful driving and favorable operating conditions, the interval between subsequent oil changes can be doubled, i.e. up to 30 thousand km or 24 months. With a sporty driving style and difficult operating conditions, maintenance may become necessary after 15 thousand km or 12 months, even if the car is equipped with the Longlife system. Cars that are serviced according to the Longlife system are released from the factory with engine oil of the VW 503 00 specification (oil quality 2). If after no more than two years of operation, another oil is poured into the car (VW 500 00, VW 501 01 or VW 502 00 - oil quality 1), then in this case it is necessary to carry out a technical inspection. In this case, the indicator is programmed in the workshop for 15 thousand km (12 months). The oil quality is indicated by a combination instrument.
If you perform maintenance work yourself, do not forget to contact the workshop for a survey using the VAS 5051 diagnostic system (or VAG 1551) electronic control device fault recorder (engine, airbag, anti-theft device, anti-lock braking system, etc.). Monitoring the fault recorder makes sense, since some defects of electronic systems are not necessarily noticeable while driving. Control devices can operate according to an emergency program, emergency programs guarantee the operation of the car even if, for example, a sensor fails.
Some programs work so well that the driver does not even notice the malfunction. Despite this, repairs should certainly be made.
