2. As described in Chapter B, remove the heat shield, unbolt and remove the associated drive shaft from the transmission flange. Move the shaft away from the transmission and support it. Wrap a plastic bag around the inner joint to keep out dirt. Turn the steering wheel to move the shaft away from the flange.
3. Place a container under the gearbox to collect the oil.
4. The flange is held in place by a retaining ring. To remove the flange, the ring must be released. Insert a chisel between the housing and the flange, screw the bolt into the flange hole, resting against the chisel. When screwing the bolt in, the flange will come out of the gearbox. If the retaining ring fits tightly in the groove, turn the flange 180° and try again.
5. After removing the flange, remember the depth of the seal in the housing and remove the seal by prying it with a screwdriver.
6. Remove all traces of dirt from the seat, lubricate the edges of the seal with clean transmission oil.
7. Install the seal into the housing with the working edges facing inward. Press it in evenly with a suitable mandrel or head, resting only on the hard edges of the seal. If the flange surface is not worn by the old seal, install the new seal at the same depth, which is 5.5 mm from the housing surface. If the surface is worn, deepen the seal by 6.5 mm (a millimeter deeper).
8. Clean the seal and apply multi-purpose grease to the working lips.
9. After removing the flange, it is recommended to replace the retaining ring. To do this, clamp the flange in the soft jaws of a vice, remove the old ring and install a new one (Fig. 7.9). Lightly lubricate the ring.

10. Insert the flange through the seal and engage it with the differential drive gear until the retaining ring snaps into place.
11. Install the drive shaft as described in chapter 8.
12. Install the wheel, then lower the car. Check the level and, if necessary, add transmission oil.
