1. Gearbox repair is a difficult task for a car enthusiast. In addition to the need to disassemble and assemble a mechanism with many small parts, exceptional measurement accuracy is required and, if necessary, the selection of different bushings, spacers, etc. Transmission internal components are often difficult to obtain and many are prohibitively expensive. Therefore, if the malfunction or noise in the gearbox progresses, it is better to entrust the repair to a specialized workshop, or purchase a remanufactured gearbox for replacement.
2. Nevertheless, gearbox repair for an experienced mechanic is quite feasible if you stock up on the necessary tools for this and do the work slowly, step by step, so as not to overlook something.
3. Circlip pliers required for repair (external and internal), bearing pullers, a soft metal hammer, a set of punches and cores, an indicator head with brackets, and possibly a hydraulic press. You also need a level, stable workbench and a vise.
4. When disassembling, it is necessary to remember how this or that part is installed in order to assemble the box correctly and without unnecessary loss of time.
5. Before starting repairs, it would be nice to have a clear idea of which gearbox assembly is faulty. Refer to section «troubleshooting» in this manual for more information.
