1. Gearbox repair is a difficult task for a car enthusiast. In addition to the need to disassemble and assemble a mechanism with many small parts, exceptional precision of measurements is required and, if necessary, the selection of different bushings, spacers, etc. Internal components of the gearbox are often difficult to purchase, many of them are unreasonably expensive. Therefore, if the malfunction or noise in the gearbox progresses, it is better to entrust the repair to a specialized workshop, or purchase a refurbished gearbox for replacement.
2. Nevertheless, repairing a gearbox is quite feasible for an experienced mechanic, if you stock up on the necessary tools and perform the work slowly, step by step, so as not to miss anything.
3. Repair requires snap ring pliers (external and internal), bearing pullers, soft metal hammer, punch and punch set, dial indicator with brackets and possibly a hydraulic press. A level, stable workbench and a vice are also required.
4. When disassembling, it is necessary to remember how this or that part is installed in order to assemble the box correctly and avoid unnecessary loss of time.
5. Before starting repairs, it would be a good idea to have a clear idea of which gearbox unit is faulty. Refer to the Troubleshooting section of this manual for more information.
