AUDI 80/90 are equipped with an alternator. Depending on the model, a generator with a capacity of 65 A to 90 A can be installed.
The generator rotates from the crankshaft through a V-belt. In this case, the armature with the excitation coil rotates inside the stator coil with a double number of engine revolutions.
The excitation current flows through the excitation winding through the carbon brushes and slip rings. This creates a magnetic field.
The position of the magnetic field relative to the stator winding is constantly changing along with the rotation of the armature. This induces an alternating current in the stator winding.
But since the battery can only be charged with DC, the AC is converted to DC by the rectifier on the diode board. The voltage regulator changes the amount of charge current, turning the excitation current on and off depending on the degree of battery charge. At the same time, the regulator maintains the on-board network voltage constant at about 14 V, regardless of the speed.
Attention: Unlike a DC generator, it is forbidden to operate an alternator without a battery. That is, you can not remove the battery when the engine is running.
