Checking and replacing the traction relay (Audi 80 B3)

If the traction relay fails, the starter pinion does not engage with the flywheel ring gear. Because of this, the starter cannot turn the engine.

Examination

Remove the starter.

Connect to terminal 50 (thick wire supply) starter using an auxiliary wire, battery voltage 12 V.

Using an auxiliary wire, short-circuit terminals 30 and 50 of the starter; the starter gear should jerk forward.

Removal

Unscrew the 3 screws securing the traction relay from the drive housing and remove the traction relay.

Installation

Secure the traction relay to the starter.

Check the starter as described above.

Install the starter.
