Note: To make the adjustments described in this Chapter, special tool number 3179 is required.
1. This engine is equipped with the MPI ignition system described in Chapter 11. The ignition timing is determined by a sensor that monitors the signal from a rotating segment on the crankshaft.
2. Set the engine to TDC of cylinder 1 as follows: Remove the spark plugs, then turn the engine clockwise until you feel compression in cylinder 1 using your finger or a rubber plug inserted into the spark plug hole.
3. While looking through the ignition timing inspection hole in the gearbox housing, continue to turn the engine clockwise until the mark on the flywheel aligns with the mark on the housing.
4. Remove the upper drive cover and check that the TDC mark on the camshaft sprocket matches the mark on the valve cover.
5. Remove the distributor cover, then use tool N 3179 to check that the center of the distributor rotor is exactly aligned with the TDC mark on the tool. The lower mark on the tool is used to check the Hall sensor.

6. If necessary, remove the plug and loosen the clamp bolt. Turn the distributor housing until the pointer and distributor runner are aligned.
7. Tighten the bolt and install the cover.
8. Install the breaker-distributor cover and the upper drive cover.
