Note: Special tool number 3179 is required to make the adjustments described in this chapter.
1. This engine is equipped with the MPI ignition system described in Chapter 11. The ignition timing is determined by a sensor that monitors the signal from the rotating segment on the crankshaft.
2. Set the engine to the TDC of the 1st cylinder as follows. Remove the spark plugs, then turn the engine clockwise until compression is felt in the 1st cylinder using a finger or a rubber plug inserted into the spark plug hole.
3. Looking through the ignition timing inspection hole in the gearbox housing, continue turning the engine clockwise until the mark on the flywheel aligns with the mark on the casing.
4. Remove the drive top cover and check that the TDC mark on the camshaft sprocket matches the mark on the valve cover.
5. Remove the breaker-distributor cover, then using tool N 3179 check that the center of the distributor slider is exactly aligned with the TDC mark on the tool. The lower mark on the tool is used to test the Hall sensor.
6. If necessary, remove the plug and loosen the clamp bolt. Rotate the distributor body until you align the pointer and the distributor slider.
7. Tighten the bolt and install the cover.
8. Install the breaker-distributor cover and drive top cover.
