Ignition timing (KV engine and 1.6/1.8 l engines) — adjustment (Audi 80 B3)

Note: A strobe light is required to perform the procedure described in this Chapter.


1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.

2. Stop the engine and connect the appliance according to the manufacturer's instructions.

3. On DZ, RM and JN engines, disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor and plug it. On all other engines, leave the hose connected.

4. Run the engine at idle speed, then aim the timing light into the hole on the left side of the clutch housing (photo). If the ignition timing is correct, a notch on the flywheel will appear at the bottom edge of the hole.

5. If adjustment is necessary, remove the plug from the distributor clamp bolt, loosen the bolt and turn the distributor as required. Tighten the bolt after adjustment and install the plug.

6. Reconnect the vacuum hose.

7. Stop the engine and remove the strobe light.
