Ignition timing angle (PS and NG engines) — adjustment (Audi 80 B3)

Note: A strobe light is required to perform the adjustments described in this Chapter.


1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.

2. Stop the engine, connect the strobe light according to the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Use the self-monitoring system to check that the knock sensor is working properly.

4. Turn off the air conditioner (where is it used),

5. On the PS engine, make sure the throttle idle switch is on.

6. On NG engine, remove the fuse box cover and insert the fuse into the fuel pump relay contacts.

7. Start the engine, set the idle speed.

8. On NG engines, insert a fuse into the fuel pump relay terminals. Wait four seconds before checking the ignition timing.

9. Point the strobe light into the timing inspection hole on the left side of the clutch housing. If the timing is correct, a notch in the flywheel will appear at the bottom edge of the hole.



10. If adjustment is necessary, remove the plug from the distributor clamp bolt, loosen the bolt and turn the distributor as required. Tighten the bolt after adjustment and install the cover.

11. Stop the engine and remove the strobe light. Remove the fuse from the fuel pump relay contacts.
