Engines YP, YZ, EP and OT, DS, DZ before July 1985.

Warm up the engine (coolant temperature 35°C, cylinder head warm).

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Turn the crankshaft and the camshaft with it using a spark plug socket wrench placed on the crankshaft pulley mounting nut or by rolling the car with 4th gear engaged.

Warning: Do not turn the camshaft by the pulley mounting bolt, as this may damage the timing belt.

Turn the camshaft, bringing the cams of the same cylinder in sequence with their backs above the ends of the tappets, i.e. when both the intake and exhaust valves of one cylinder are closed (for example, with the valves of the 4th cylinder fully open, the valve clearances of the 1st cylinder should be measured). Measurements should be taken with a set of feeler gauges with particular care, observing the order of operation of the cylinders (1-3-4-2).

Clearances in the valve drive mechanism

The clearance between the camshaft cams and the adjusting washers on a warm engine should be 0.25±0.05 mm for the intake valves and 0.45±0.05 mm for the exhaust valves, on a cold engine, respectively: 0.20±0.05 and 0.40±0.05 mm.

If the clearance values are within the permissible limits, there is no need to replace the valve adjusting washers.

To adjust the thermal clearances in the valve drive, proceed as follows:
  • install, as indicated above, the cams of the required cylinder with the back part on the ends of the pushers;
  • i will turn the pushers with the slot perpendicular to the camshaft axis;
  • turn the engine crankshaft back ¼ turn so that the VW 546 tool can be installed and the tappets can be pressed into the cylinder head;
  • lift the adjusting washer 1 (see photo) using puller 10 208 and remove it;
  • select from the kit an adjusting washer of the required thickness to ensure normal clearance and install the washer with the marked surface to the end of the pusher. Adjusting washers with a thickness of 3.00-4.25 mm with an interval of every 0.05 mm are supplied as spare parts;

Note. Used adjusting washers are allowed for further use if they have no mechanical defects. It is recommended to store adjusting washers in a special container 10-212.

  • by successively turning the camshaft as indicated above, adjust the clearances of the remaining valves, observing the order of operation of the cylinders.

Check and, if necessary, finally adjust the valve drive clearances on a warm engine.

Engines DT, DS, DZ since July 1985.

Since July 1985, hydraulic tappets have been used in the valve drive mechanism of DT, OS, DZ engine models, providing automatic compensation of valve clearances.
