Checking the timing belt
Release the two clips securing the upper timing belt cover and pull the cover up and forward until the timing belt is visible.
Make a mark on the belt with chalk. Turn the crankshaft clockwise using the pulley mounting bolt until the mark appears again, while visually checking the condition of the belt. The following defects may be found on the toothed belt:
- wear or chipping of teeth;
- wear or delamination on the outer surface of the timing belt;
- wear or damage on one side of the belt;
- cracks on the outer surface of the toothed belt;
- oil stains or greasy tracks on the timing belt.
If there are any defects on the timing belt, it must be replaced.
Measure the width of the timing belt (see fig. 1.20). If the belt width is less than 22 mm, it must be replaced.

Stop the upper timing belt cover and secure with two clamps.
Replacing the timing belt
On the 2.5-I-TDI engine, two timing belts need to be replaced.
On the 2.8-1 petrol engine and the 1.9-I-TDI engine, in addition to the 110 hp engine with number 4 BYN 002 888, it is also necessary to replace the timing belt tensioner mechanism.
Depending on the engine type, different timing belt replacement intervals are provided.
Operations for replacing timing belts and tensioning mechanisms are given in Chapter 2 "Engines".
Checking the timing belt on the 2.5-I-TDI engine
The 2.5-I-TDI engine has two toothed belts: one for driving the camshafts and one for driving the fuel pump. Every 30,000 km of the car's mileage, the condition of the toothed belts must be checked and they must be replaced after 120,000 at the latest.
Remove the upper timing belt cover.
Check the condition of the timing belts (see above checking the timing belt on a 1.9-1110 hp diesel engine.).
Replace timing belts, see chapter 2 "Engines".
Check the tension of the fuel pump toothed belt. Mark 1 (Fig. 1.21) of the tension roller must be aligned with pointer 2. Otherwise, adjust the tension of the toothed belt, see Chapter 2 "Engines".
Install the upper timing belt cover.
