In some models driver and passenger airbags are installed as standard equipment, in some models as an option. On models equipped with cushions, the driver's cushion is installed in the middle of the steering wheel. The passenger cushion is installed in the front panel above the glove box. The system includes pillow blocks (together with gas generators). shock sensor, control unit and indicator on the instrument panel. Some models are also equipped with side airbags and seat belt tensioners integrated into a common system with front airbags. The complexity of removal and installation is beyond the scope of this manual.
The system is triggered by a frontal impact of a certain force, depending on the direction of impact. In a few milliseconds, the airbag inflates, forming a safety bubble between the driver and the steering wheel and (if installed) passenger and front panel. This greatly reduces the risk of injury to the driver and passenger. The pillow deflates almost immediately through the side openings. The control unit also causes the seat belt pretensioner mechanisms to deploy at the same time as the airbags deploy.
When the ignition is switched on, the control unit performs a self-test, which lasts about three seconds, during which the indicator on the instrument panel lights up. At the end of the test, the indicator goes out. If the light does not come on, comes on later, stays on for more than three seconds, or stays on while the vehicle is moving, there is a problem with the system. In this case, the car must be immediately presented to the specialists of the dealer car service.
