Constant control
Exhaust fumes, oil vapor and silicone from paint care products stubbornly settle on the glass. Therefore, in the warm season, it is recommended to add a cleaning agent to the water for washing glasses; in winter, antifreeze with the addition of detergent is suitable.
1. The branch pipe for filling the liquid is located in all models on the left in the engine compartment on the side wall, but the tanks themselves have different shapes and sizes depending on the engine and configuration.
2. In vehicles without a headlight washer system, the windshield washer fluid reservoir has a capacity of approximately 3.5 liters.
3. Vehicles with a headlight washer system have a reservoir with a capacity of approximately 6.5 liters.
4. Vehicles with a turbo engine and a windshield washer system are equipped with a two-part reservoir to save space. One tank is located - as in all models - under the wing, hidden in the wheel arch. The second tank is located exactly opposite inside in the engine compartment.
5. Pour the additive first and then the water so that the liquids in the reservoir mix well.
6. In a vehicle without heated water jets (available in «winter package») nozzles can freeze in severe frost.
7. For prevention, it is recommended to use a higher concentration of antifreeze. Mixing denatured alcohol in combination with antifreeze can lead to flaking and clogging of spray nozzles.
8. To prevent the windshield washer fluid from clogging the spray nozzles, it is recommended that a commercially available gasoline filter be installed in the fluid supply hose.
Tips: You should not fill the glass-wash water from the flasks of water often at the ready at gas stations, as there are often oil and grease residues that will then end up on your windshield and, during rain, create an obstructive lubricating film in the wiper field.
If the field of view on the windshield remains cloudy despite the addition of detergents to the water, then an old familiar brass cleaner will help «Sidol» (but not «Sidol Spezial»). It is applied with a cloth and allowed to dry, and then the white dust is wiped off with a clean cloth. In this way, residues of oil, varnish care products and other substances are reliably removed.
Water jet adjustment
When the windshield washer system is activated, four jets of water splash out on the windshield of the Audi A4. Adjustment is carried out as follows:
1. Insert the needle into the spray hole. nozzles.
2. The nozzle opening itself is placed in a ball that is rotated with a needle.
3. Turn the nozzle until the water jets fall on the windshield as shown in the figure.
Electrically heated water jets
Despite the addition of antifreeze, the windshield washer fluid may freeze in the front spray nozzles due to headwinds. This is helped by the device for heating the nozzles, available in «winter package».
Directly in front of the nozzles is a metal housing with temperature-dependent heating resistance. When the ignition is turned on (terminal X) voltage is applied to this resistor. Nozzles quickly thaw in frost due to the initial current of high strength (0.5–0.7 A). To maintain the temperature, the current after the warm-up phase drops to approximately 200 mA. If the air temperature drops below -15°C, the temperature maintenance current rises to 320 mA.
Troubleshooting
If the heating of the water nozzles does not work, then check the following components:
1. With the hood open, disconnect the nozzle connector.
2. Using the voltage indicator with the ignition on, check if there is voltage or if the ground connection is in order.
3. If not, find a break in the wire.
4. If everything is in order with the voltage supply, then you need to replace the nozzle.
