Checking the start of fuel injection can be done either after dismantling the engine or directly on the car. Here is a method for checking with the engine on the car. To check, you need an indicator with a corresponding adapter to connect it to the high-pressure fuel pump.

Set the piston of cylinder 1 to the TDC position. To do this, turn the crankshaft until the TDC marks on the flywheel coincide with the pointer on the clutch housing and the mark on the fuel injection pump wheel with the console.

Do not pull out the cold start wire.

The timing belt tension must be correct.

Unscrew the screw plug on the fuel pump cover.

Screw in the nozzle (VAG 2066) with an arrow indicator (limit 0-0.3 mm) instead of the screw plug until the indicator arrow starts moving. Set the dial to "O". Then press the device further until the load on the device shows 2.5 mm.

Slowly rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until the instrument needle stops moving.

Set the device to "0" with a pre-tension of 1 mm.

Rotate the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation until the TDC mark on the flywheel matches the pointer. The gauge should now show the test values.

Note: If the value is within the acceptable limits, no further adjustment is required.

To adjust, loosen the three console bolts and the mounting bolt on the rear support.

To adjust, loosen the three console bolts and the mounting bolt on the rear support.

Loosen the lower console mounting bolt at the front through the hole in the fuel pump wheel -arrow-.

Rotate to set the pump stroke to the desired value and tighten the mounting bolts to 25 Nm.

Remove the measuring device and screw the screw plug into the pump cover.

Caution: Always replace the screw plug sealing ring. Tightening torque: 15 Nm. If loose, tighten to 25 Nm.
