Position the VW 210 tester between the camshaft sprocket and the injection pump gear so that the toothed belt runs between the guide rails and the tester's dipstick.
Tension the spring of the device with a handle to a value on a scale of 12-13. On the side of the measuring probe, a steel tongue protrudes from the control device, on which a white horizontal line is applied. In this position, this horizontal line must be overlapped by the edge of the control device. If this is not the case, the toothed belt tension should be adjusted.
Adjustment
Install control device.
By turning the knob to the right, tighten the control spring to the value on the scale of the device 12-13.
Check the tension roller until the white horizontal line on the steel tongue matches the edge of the housing.
Attention: This requires a wrench (e.g. MATRA-V 159 or HAZET 2587).
Install the upper toothed belt cover.
Check the timing of the start of fuel injection of the high pressure fuel pump.
Attention: In the absence of regulation and control equipment (in case of an accident en route, abroad) You can also adjust the timing belt tension temporarily. Namely, you should tighten the toothed belt like this. so that it can be easily rotated 90°with the thumb and forefinger.
Attention: However, at the next opportunity, the tension of the toothed belt must then be adjusted using a control device. Until then, avoid running the engine at high speeds.
