The engine is a 4-cylinder, in-line with an overhead camshaft, traditionally installed in front of the car. The crankshaft has five main bearings, the center main bearing shells include flanges or separate thrust washers to adjust the crankshaft side play. The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft sprocket. The belt also drives an intermediate shaft which is used to rotate the distributor, oil pump and fuel pump (on carbureted engines). The valves are driven from the camshaft via hydraulic tappets and the valve clearances are set automatically.
The engine has a full-flow lubrication system from a gear-type oil pump mounted in a sump and driven by a distributor extension, which is independently mounted on the countershaft.
The oil filter is cartridge type, mounted on the left side of the cylinder block. There are two oil pressure sensors located on the oil filter housing, the lower one is triggered at 0.3 bar, the upper one at 1.8 bar.
