1. Depress the brake pedal several times to remove the vacuum from the vacuum booster, or release the pressure in the hydraulic booster unit (depending on the model).
2. Remove the filler cap of the brake reservoir (photo), draw out the liquid with a syringe or a flexible plastic balloon. Be careful not to spill the liquid on the car's paint - if this happens, rinse immediately with copious amounts of cold water.
3. Where equipped, disconnect the clutch supply pipes from the reservoir (photo).
4. Mark the location of the hydraulic brake pipes using adhesive tape.
5. Place a rag under the master cylinder, then loosen the union nuts and disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder only. Seal the ends of the tubes, or cover them with duct tape.
6. Unscrew the mounting nuts or bolts, disconnect the main cylinder from the amplifier block (photo). Remove the seal.
7. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Install a new seal on the booster block, then bleed the hydraulic system as described in Chapter 17. The brake pipe connecting nuts must be firmly tightened, but do not overtighten them, otherwise the flange at the end of the pipe may be damaged.
