Place a container under the engine to collect the coolant and drain the coolant from the cooling system by disconnecting the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing pipe and removing the plug from the expansion tank.
On fuel injected engines, disconnect the air line from the intake manifold that goes to the fuel metering unit.
On carburetor engines, disconnect the fuel supply hose from the fuel pump and the fuel drain hose from the carburetor and close the openings of the hoses with plugs.
Remove the alternator drive belt.
Depending on the engine model, crush the protective cover or the upper protective cover of the timing belt.
Loosen the tension roller axle mounting nut and remove the camshaft drive belt.
Remove the generator tension bar and move the generator away from the engine.
Remove the air filter.
Disconnect the electrical wires from the carburetor and disconnect the carburetor plug connectors.
Disconnect the throttle cable and vacuum hoses from the carburetor or throttle body.
Remove the intake manifold.
Unscrew the flange of the muffler inlet pipe from the exhaust manifold.
Remove the exhaust manifold.
Disconnect the high voltage wire harness and remove the spark plugs.
Disconnect the cooling system hoses from the cylinder head that go to the radiator and heater.
Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hoses from the cylinder head.
On fuel-injected engines, remove the injectors and electrical wires.
Remove the cylinder head cover.
Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts in the reverse order of tightening.
Remove the cylinder head.
Clean the removed parts and determine their condition by visual inspection. Use special cleaning agents to clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head. Do not use scratch-producing objects or abrasive materials for these purposes.
