Place a container under the engine to collect the coolant and drain the coolant from the cooling system by disconnecting the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing nozzle and removing the plug from the expansion tank.
On engines with fuel injection, disconnect the air line going to the fuel dispenser from the intake manifold.
On carburetor engines, disconnect the fuel supply hose from the fuel pump, and the fuel drain hose from the carburetor and close the hose openings with plugs.
Remove the alternator drive belt.
Depending on the engine model, crush the protective cover or the upper protective cover of the camshaft drive belt.
Loosen the nut securing the idler shaft and remove the camshaft drive belt.
Remove the alternator tension bar and move the alternator away from the engine.
Remove air filter.
Disconnect the electrical wires from the carburetor and disconnect the carburetor plug connectors.
Disconnect the throttle cable and vacuum hoses from the carburetor or throttle body.
Remove intake pipe.
Unbolt muffler exhaust pipe flange from exhaust manifold.
Remove exhaust manifold.
Disconnect the high voltage wire harness and remove the spark plugs.
Disconnect the cooling system hoses from the cylinder head to the radiator and heater.
Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hoses from the cylinder head.
On engines with fuel injection, remove the injectors and electrical wires.
Remove cylinder head cover.
Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts in the reverse order of tightening.
Remove cylinder head.
Clean the removed parts and visually determine their condition. To clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head, use special detergents. It is forbidden to use objects that can leave scratches and abrasive materials for this purpose.
