Withdrawal
Cool down the engine.
Remove all spark plug tips, taking hold of the tip, not the cable. A special grip such as the HAZET 1849 will make the job easier.
Clean candle niches, if possible, with compressed air.
Unscrew the candles with a special key.
Examination
Check the appearance of the candle. It can be used to draw conclusions about the condition of the engine. The following rules apply:
Electrodes and insulator body
- Grey=carburetor adjustment and spark plug operation correct
- Black = Mix too rich
- Light Grey=Mix too lean
- Greased = protruding spark plug or loose piston rings
Clean the spark plugs with a brush or sandblast.
Check spark plug insulators for surface leakage currents. They appear as thin, irregular traces on the surface. If traces of leakage currents are not eliminated, the spark plug should be replaced.
Check spark plug gap with a feeler gauge. Otherwise, replace the spark plug.
Installation
Clean threads on spark plug and cylinder head.
Screw in the spark plug by hand until it stops.
Attention: make sure that the candle is not warped.
Tighten the spark plugs to the correct torque.
Attention: If a torque wrench is not available, new spark plugs with a flat seal -A- must be tightened by 90° (¼ turn). Tighten spark plugs with conical seal -B- by 15°. as well as used candles with a flat seal. Spark plugs that are too tight can burst when turned out or strip the threads in the cylinder head.
Put on the tips of the spark plugs in the order of ignition. Check the tightness of the tips and cables. The order of ignition of the 4-cylinder engine: 1-3-4-2; 5-cylinder engine: 1-2-4-5-3. There is a mark on the distributor cover next to the output of the first cylinder, then follow the direction of rotation of the slider with a 4-cylinder engine, the ignition cable of the 3rd cylinder, then the 4th cylinder, etc. The direction of rotation is shown as an arrow on the distributor cap. If there are no marks on the cover, remove it together with the anther. There is a notch on the edge of the distributor, above it, when the cover is installed, the output of the 1st cylinder is located. With the distributor cover removed, turn on the starter for a short time and determine the direction of movement of the slider. Cylinder numbers are considered in front (toothed belt) back (flywheel).
