External check of gearbox tightness (Audi 80 B3)

The following leaks are possible:

• The junction between the engine block and the gearbox (flywheel seal/gearbox shaft seal).
• Oil filler plug/oil drain plug.
• Drive shaft at the box.

When searching for a leak, proceed as follows:

• Wash the gearbox housing with cold engine cleaner.
• Check the oil level and top up if necessary.
• Sprinkle suspected leak areas with lime or talc.
• Test drive. Since oil liquefies when the engine is hot and leaks more quickly, test drive the engine about 30 km on the highway.
• Raise the car and use a lamp to locate the leak.
• Fix the leak immediately.
