  • Checking the oil level in an automatic transmission

The correct oil level is essential for the perfect operation of the automatic transmission, so a thorough check should be carried out every 3-4 months.

The dipstick is located in the engine compartment. This is also where the ATF is poured (Automatic Transmission Fluid)

Note: The check must be carried out on a warmed-up gearbox (60°C). At higher or lower temperatures the oil level may be different. (Thermal expansion of ATF). Accurate measurement is only possible at a given temperature.

Warm up the engine. The transmission oil temperature should be 60°C.

Place the unloaded vehicle on a level surface.

Set the gearshift lever to position "P" and apply the handbrake.

During the test, the engine is idling.

During the test, the engine is idling.

Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a lint-free cloth, or better yet, leather. Then insert it completely from the right and remove it, read the readings

The fluid level at temperature (60°C) should be between the two marks on the dipstick.

If the oil level is very low, check the gearbox for leaks and fix it if necessary. Also check the oil level in the main gear. If the level is OK, add ATF for the planetary gear. Otherwise, replace the gasket between the planetary and main gear.

If you need to top up ATF, use a clean funnel and a fine mesh strainer. The amount of fluid between the max and min marks is 0.23 l.

Caution: Do not overfill the oil. Too much oil may cause problems with the automatic system. In any case, excess oil must be drained or pumped out with a syringe.

At the same time, check the old oil for appearance and smell. Burnt friction linings cause a burning smell. Dirty oil can cause problems with transmission control.

Caution: Only factory-prescribed ATF oils may be used.

All approved ATF oils can be mixed with each other. Do not use any additives. Without ATF oil in the torque converter and gearbox, do not start the engine or tow the vehicle.

After successful checking and correction, reinsert the oil level dipstick.

Press the brake pedal and sequentially engage all positions of the gearbox lever. Check the oil level again.
