Rack and pinion steering is easy to move and has no backlash from lock to lock. It does not require maintenance. except for checking the condition of the seals.
Depending on the model or version, the steering can be equipped with a hydraulic booster (servo control). Servo control provides a minimum expenditure of forces for control. The servo system consists of an oil pump, reservoir and pressure pipes. The pump is driven through a V-belt drive.
The pump draws hydraulic oil from the reservoir and delivers it at high pressure to the valve assembly. It is located on the steering gearbox and, being mechanically connected to the steering column, supplies fluid, depending on the deflection of the steering wheel, to a certain side of the working cylinder. There, the liquid presses on the piston of the gear rack and thereby helps control.
At the same time, the piston pushes fluid to the other side of the working cylinder through the return hole and then through the return line back to the reservoir.
As a rule, AUDI 80/90 models are equipped with a security system, the so-called Procon / Ten: Procon = Programmed Contraction, programmed to fold the steering column in an accident; Ten = Tension = tension, automatic tension of the front seat belts. With the Procon / Ten system, a maintenance-free stainless steel cable is fixed in the upper part of the steering column, its lower part is pulled around the column and fixed to the body. In the event of a strong frontal impact, the engine with the gearbox is displaced relative to the body back. Due to this, the cable pulls the steering wheel down and removes it from the area of possible contact with the driver.
Attention: Welding and straightening work on the steering system is not allowed.
