Ignition switch, engine start

Note: Starting the engine using the system "Advanced Key" described in the subsection below.

The positions of the ignition switch are shown in Illustration 6.2.

6.2. Ignition switch positions.

6.2. Ignition switch positions.

In position "0" the key can be inserted into the lock and removed. At the same time, the steering column lock is switched on/off accordingly.

To turn on the ignition and preheat the diesel engine, turn the key to position "1" and release it (if engine starting is not required). Before starting the diesel engine, the key should be held in position "1" until the pre-glow system indicator lamp goes out. When the engine is warm and the outside air temperature is more than 8°C, the diesel engine can be started immediately (the pre-glow indicator lamp lights up for only 1 second).

To start the engine, depress the brake pedal, move the transmission control lever to "P" or "N" and turn the key to position "2" without pressing the accelerator pedal. If the diesel engine last stalled due to running out of fuel, it will take up to one minute to restart. When the key is released from position "2", it returns to position "1".

To turn off the ignition, turn the key from position "1" to position "0." Before turning off an engine running under heavy load, let it idle for about two minutes. Do not remove the key from the ignition until the vehicle has stopped, otherwise steering lock may cause an accident. After the ignition is switched off, the key can only be removed if the transmission control lever is in the "P" position, after which the lever is locked together with the steering column.

If the electronic ignition switch or steering column lock is faulty, the corresponding indicator lamp in the instrument cluster comes on.

If you cannot remove the key from the ignition switch when all conditions are met (for example, if the battery is discharged), follow these steps. Turn the key to position "0", press the lock release button with a thin object (see illustration 6.3) and, holding it, remove the key from the ignition switch.

6.3. Removing the key lock from the ignition switch.

6.3. Removing the key lock from the ignition switch.

Starting the engine using the system "Advanced Key"

To turn on the ignition and start the engine using the system "Advanced Key" (see Section 1) the button is used "Engine start" (28 in illustration 6.1). Pressing this button to the first/second position corresponds to the positions respectively (1 and 2 in Illustration 6.2) ignition switch. The sequence of actions for turning on the ignition and starting the engine is the same as when using the ignition switch.

To turn off the ignition, stop the car, set the transmission control lever to position "P" or "N" and press the button "Engine Stop" (28 in illustration 6.1). The first press switches off the ignition/engine, and a second long press engages the steering column lock (only if the selector lever is in the "P" position). In an emergency, the engine can be switched off when the selector lever is in the "R", "D" or "S" positions, if the vehicle speed is less than 10 km/h: to do this, hold down the button "Engine Stop" pressed, press the brake pedal.

If certain conditions are not met when starting/stopping the engine, appropriate warning messages are displayed on the instrument cluster display.

Transmission control

The selector lever is used to control the transmission (25 in illustration 6.1), located on the center console. To manually shift gears, you can use the paddle shifters on the back of the steering wheel (see illustration 6.4).

6.4 Manual gear shifters.

6.4 Manual gear shifters.

The transmission's proper functioning is constantly monitored, and if a malfunction or overheating occurs, a corresponding message is displayed on the instrument cluster display. When the transmission is switched to emergency mode, all transmission mode indicator segments are switched on or off at once. In emergency mode, the AT will only operate in 3rd or 5th gear (depending on which gear was previously selected).

The selector lever can be set to one of the following positions (transmission operating modes): P, R, N, D, S, + and -. The current position is shown on the display in the instrument cluster and also next to the selector lever. In forward driving modes (D and S), the current gear is indicated in the additional instrument cluster.

To move the selector lever out of the "P" position, the ignition must be on, the brake pedal depressed, and the button located on the selector lever handle pressed. This button must also be pressed each time the selector lever is moved through the following positions: "PR", "R-P" and "NR". The selector lever is locked if, with the brake pedal released and at a speed of less than 5 km/h, it remains in the "N" position for more than two seconds (to move the lever out of "N", depress the brake pedal). During rapid movement of the lever between the "R" and "D" positions, the lock in the "N" position is not activated, allowing the driver to "rock" out of mud or snow. To remind the driver to depress the brake pedal to move the lever out of the "P" or "N" position, the corresponding green indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up (see Section 7).

If it is not possible to move the selector lever from the "P" position when all conditions are met (for example, if the battery is discharged), you can move the lever out of "P" manually. To do this, remove the ashtray, take out the plug and push the lever down through the resulting opening (see illustration 6.5).

6.5. Emergency release of the selector lever from the «P» position.

6.5. Emergency release of the selector lever from the "P" position.

While holding this lever, move the selector lever from position "P" to "N", not forgetting to press the button on the handle. Note: On models without an ashtray, the lever is located in the same place under the rubber mat, which can be carefully lifted with a screwdriver or other thin object.

When stopping on a slope with the selector lever in the drive position, do not use the accelerator pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling, as this may cause overheating and damage to the transmission. Instead, you should keep the brake pedal depressed.

The transmission, both in automatic and manual mode, has a "Kick-down" function - lowering the gear by one or more steps when the gas pedal is fully depressed (through the point of resistance). This feature is used to provide maximum acceleration (for example, when overtaking) and traction (for example, when moving uphill). After this, upshifts will occur when the maximum RPM is reached, unless the accelerator pedal is released before that point. To return to normal operation, release the gas pedal.

Caution: When downshifting on a slippery road, there is a risk of skidding.

The transmission operating modes are described below.

"P" (Park). In this position, the transmission is locked and the drive wheels cannot rotate. Before moving the selector lever to this position, stop the vehicle completely and press the lock release button on the selector lever handle; when parking on a slope, be sure to first set the parking brake.

Caution: Shifting the selector lever to the "P" position while the vehicle is moving will cause the wheels to lock, causing loss of vehicle control and may damage the transmission. Do not use the "P" position instead of the parking brake - they must be used together. When you release the brake pedal, a stationary car with the selector lever in position "P" may move forward or backward a few centimeters if the parking brake is not engaged.

"R" (Reversing). This position of the selector lever is used to engage reverse gear. To engage the "R" mode from the "P" or "N" modes, press the button on the selector lever handle while the brake pedal is depressed.

Caution: To avoid damage to the transmission, make sure the vehicle is completely stopped before engaging reverse gear. After engaging the "R" mode, wait for the gear to engage (you can feel it in the engine's thrust).

When the ignition is on in the "R" mode, the reversing lights come on.

"N" (Neutral position). The wheels and transmission are not locked, the car can be moved freely. Engine torque is not transmitted to the wheels. If the selector lever is accidentally moved to the "N" position while driving, release the accelerator pedal and wait until the engine speed drops before moving the selector lever to "D". At a speed of less than 5 km/h and with the ignition on, to move the selector lever out of the "N" position, you must depress the brake pedal. When coasting for long periods of time, the transmission may be damaged due to lack of lubrication.

"D" (Drive). The normal position of the selector lever when the vehicle is moving forward; can only be selected at idle speed of the crankshaft. The transmission shifts between all forward gears based on the optimal balance of power and fuel economy. In this mode, pressing one of the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel temporarily switches to manual gear shifting mode.

Note: To achieve optimum efficiency, gear selection takes into account outside temperature, road gradient, vehicle load, driver commands and other conditions.

"S" (sports mode). In Sport mode, gear shifting occurs automatically, as in "D" mode, but at higher engine speeds to fully exploit its power. In this mode, pressing one of the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel temporarily switches to manual gear shifting mode.

"+" and "-" (manual mode). When the selector lever is moved from the "D" position to the right, the transmission switches to manual control mode and operates in the previous gear until critical engine speed is reached or another gear is manually engaged. A subsequent short push of the lever to the "+" or "-" position shifts the transmission into up/down gear. You can also shift gears by skipping intermediate gears by successively pushing the lever to the appropriate position at short intervals.

Note: Do not hold the selector lever in the "+" or "-" position continuously.

In manual mode, gear shifting can also be done using the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. At excessively low or high crankshaft speeds, the transmission automatically shifts down or up. The selected gear is engaged only when the corresponding vehicle speed and crankshaft speed are reached.

Parking brake

The pedal and handle on the left side of the instrument panel are used to engage and release the parking brake (31 and 33 in Illustration 6.1).

The activation of the parking brake is indicated by the corresponding indicator in the instrument cluster (see Section 7). When driving at a speed of more than 5 km/h for more than 3 seconds with the parking brake engaged, an audible warning is given and a corresponding message is displayed on the display.
