The gearbox must not be in emergency mode. Place the car on a lift or in a pit so that it stands horizontally. The selector lever is in position "P". To engage the electromechanical parking brake, pull the parking brake button. The hose/hoses of the switched-on exhaust gas extraction system are connected. The air conditioning system and heater are switched off. Connect the "VAS 5051B" tester. The ATF oil temperature must not exceed 30°C by the time the test begins. If the temperature is higher, the gearbox must first cool down. The ATF temperature data is read from the "VAS 5051B" tester. The ATF level changes depending on the ATF temperature. Checking the ATF oil level when the ATF temperature is too low will result in overfilling of the oil. Checking the ATF oil level when the ATF temperature is too high will result in underfilling of the oil. Both an elevated and insufficient oil level will cause malfunctions of the gearbox. Select the following menu items on the tester in "Function/Assembly Selection" of the Guided Fault Finding: "Drive", "Gearbox 0B6", "01-Self-diagnostic systems", "02 - Gearbox Electronics", "02 - Gearbox Electronics, Functions", "02-Read measured values". Select the measured value "Transmission Oil Temperature" from the list on the tester. Read the ATF oil temperature.

Note: The ATF level should be checked at the ATF level plug. The ATF level is correct if, when the level plug is unscrewed at an ATF temperature between 35 and 45°C (for countries with hot climates 50°C), ATF flows slightly out of the hole (due to an increase in its level when heated). Risk of damage to the gearbox. For the 0B6 automatic transmission, only the original ATF oil supplied as a spare part may be used. Using other oils will result in malfunction and, accordingly, in gearbox failure. The ATF filling device must be clean and ATF must not be mixed with other oils!

Fill the ATF oil filling device tank with ATF oil for automatic transmission 0B6, ATF oil…

The ATF filling system reservoir should be secured as high as possible in the vehicle. Risk of damage to the gearbox. Do not start the engine if the ATF level in the automatic transmission is insufficient or there is no ATF after repairs or if there is a large loss of ATF. In this case, pre-fill the engine. Remove the rear noise insulation screen "2". Start the engine with the selector in position "P". With the brake pedal depressed and the gearbox idling, move the automatic transmission selector to all positions ("P", "R", "N", "D", "S"), and each position must be engaged for at least 10 seconds. Shift the selector to position "N". Increase the rotation speed to 2000 rpm and wait at least 60 seconds. Move the selector lever to position "P". Leave the engine idling. Place a device for filling and pumping out oil under the gearbox.

When the ATF oil temperature reaches 35°C, unscrew the ATF oil level screw plug "arrow B" and drain off excess ATF oil if necessary. The ATF oil level inspection plug is accessed through the opening in the tunnel transverse arm.

When the ATF oil temperature reaches 35°C, unscrew the ATF oil level screw plug «arrow B» and drain…

If the ATF oil starts to flow out of the inspection hole before reaching a temperature of 40°C, then the ATF oil level "arrow" is normal. At an ATF temperature of maximum 45°C (for countries with hot climate 50?C) the ATF inspection hole should be closed again.

If the ATF oil starts to flow out of the inspection hole before reaching a temperature of 40°C,…

Tighten the ATF screw plug with a new "arrow" seal to 9 Nm. This completes the ATF fluid check.

Tighten the ATF screw plug with a new «arrow» seal to 9 Nm. This completes the ATF fluid check.

Install sound insulation. If at temperatures up to 40°C the ATF oil does not flow out of the inspection hole, refill.

ATF refill

When the ATF temperature reaches no higher than 45°C (for countries with hot climates 50°C), close the inspection hole again, if necessary, turn off the engine, let the gearbox cool down and repeat the check. Install the filling tip of the ATF oil filling device von from below into the opening of the protective cap "arrow", avoiding pushing the cap upwards. Add ATF oil using the ATF oil filling device until it flows out of the inspection hole. Underfilling or overfilling of ATF oil impairs the functioning of the gearbox.

Tighten the ATF screw plug with a new sleeve "arrow" to 9 Nm. This completes the ATF fluid check. Remove any remaining ATF oil from the tunnel control arm and thoroughly clean the tunnel control arm. There are many grooves on the upper side of the tunnel control arm in which protruding ATF oil can collect. These should be thoroughly cleaned. Ignore the "arrows". Install the sound insulation at the rear.
