Pistons and connecting rods
1. Bolts: replace; lubricate the threads and mating surface with oil; 35 Nm + 90°.
2. Connecting rod cap: Mark for reinstallation; mark the cylinder affiliation with paint "B"; installation position: take into account the cast marks "A".
3. Bearing shells: install in the proper position; replace old bearing shells.
4. Connecting rod: replace only the entire set; mark the cylinder affiliation with paint "B"; installation position: take into account the cast marks "A": axial displacement for each pair of connecting rods: new 0.20...0.44 mm.
5. Retaining ring: replace.
6. Piston pin: if the pin is difficult to install, heat the piston to 60°C; remove and install using the "VW222 A" tool.
7. Piston: mark installation. position and belonging to the cylinder; if a scratch appears on the piston bottom or piston skirt, replace the piston; measure the inner diameter of the cyl.; install using a piston ring installer; measure the piston protrusion at TDC.
8. Piston rings: spread the locks around the circumference at 120°; remove and install using piston ring pliers; the "TOP" mark faces the piston bottom; measure the thermal gap.
Piston cooling oil nozzle
1. Bolt - 9 Nm. 2. Piston cooling oil nozzle with valve.
Note: Do not bend the oil nozzles to spray oil. The curved oil spray nozzles must be replaced.
Measure the piston ring clearance
Install the piston ring on top, at a right angle to the cylinder wall. and insert it to the bottom hole of the cyl. at a distance of about 15 mm from its edge. For this purpose, use a piston without rings.
