1. Apply the handbrake and start the engine.
2. Shift into 3rd gear, then slowly engage the clutch and press the accelerator pedal.
3. If the clutch is in perfect condition, the engine will stall.
4. If the engine continues to run, it means it is time to replace the clutch.
What causes clutch wear?
Starting off at high revs (cavalry start) or in 2nd gear leads to severe wear of the friction linings. If you do not take your foot off the clutch pedal while driving, the clutch constantly rubs slightly. Even the best linings cannot withstand such a mode for a long time. The bad habit of holding the car on a slope using the clutch pedal and the accelerator pedal also has a bad effect on the linings. The clutch also wears out if you have a habit of waiting for the green light at the traffic light with 1st gear engaged and the clutch pedal depressed. In this case, the bearing is heavily loaded. It is better to disengage the clutch while the red light is on, and engage 1st gear only when the traffic light switches to yellow.
