The removed battery should be charged every month, as batteries that are not used for a long time are discharged. This, of course, also applies to the battery of a temporarily unused vehicle. To charge the battery, Audi recommends using the VAG 1471, VAG 1648 or VAS 1974 chargers.

Do not enter the room where the battery is being charged with an open flame or a lit cigarette due to the gases produced. Ensure adequate ventilation, as sparks that occur when connecting or disconnecting wires may cause an explosion of detonating gas.

The plugs must be screwed in tightly. The minimum battery temperature is 10°C. And one more piece of advice: accelerated charging is harmful to the battery. When accelerated charging a deeply discharged battery (see also description of work operation 3) or do not accept the charging current or, due to the so-called surface charge, are charged too quickly. The batteries appear to be in good working order, but this impression is deceptive. Due to this, accelerated charging can only be used in exceptional cases, such as when starting an engine with a discharged battery.

If the battery is still in the car, turn off the ignition before charging. Disconnect the ground cable first, then the positive cable.

1. Connect the positive wire of the charger to the positive pole of the battery and the negative wire to the negative pole.

2. Set the charging current on the charger according to the battery capacity. The current should be approximately 10% of the battery capacity, i.e. for a 60 Ah battery. The current should be approximately 6 A. Turn on the charger.

3. In the case of deep discharge batteries, whose open circuit voltage is less than 11.6 V, the electrolyte consists almost entirely of water, and the proportion of sulfuric acid drops sharply. Because of this, completely discharged batteries can freeze and be destroyed in the cold. Deep discharge of the battery leads to sulfation of the plates, all surfaces of the plates harden.

The electrolyte becomes opaque and acquires a whitish color.

If a deep discharge battery is charged immediately after discharge, the sulfation disappears. If the battery is not charged, the plates continue to harden and the battery's ability to accept a charge decreases. As a result, the battery's performance deteriorates. Sulfated deep discharge batteries should be charged with a small current, so set the charging current to no more than 5% of the battery's capacity. Thus, for a 60 Ah battery, the charging current should be 3 A. The charging voltage should not exceed 14.4 V.

4. The charging time should be 24 hours.

5. When connecting the battery, do not forget to activate the radio, radio navigation system, clock in accordance with the operating manual (coding) and electric windows.
