The starter may fail due to malfunction of various parts. For example, it may be jamming or severe wear of the traction relay or contact carbons. The bearing may also be worn out. If the starter does not rotate with a charged battery, or rotates too slowly and does not turn the engine, it is also necessary to check the connection of the wires to the traction relay and the fastening of the flexible jumpers between the engine, body and battery, they should not be oxidized.

The position in which the starter is mounted, and therefore the process of its removal and installation, differs depending on the engine. Removing and installing a starter in a 4-cylinder engine differs from removing and installing it in a 6-cylinder engine, but in both cases, all this is done at the bottom of the car. In addition, it should be borne in mind that in cars with an independent heater, it is necessary to unscrew three screws securing the heater pipe on the noise-insulating cover. The cover itself is removed downwards after loosening the fasteners at ten points.

1. Pay attention to the coding of the radio and navigation system, if necessary, interrogate the code. With the ignition off, disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Removal: 8 For vehicles with a 4-cylinder engine, unscrew the wire for terminal 8+. Then remove the plug connection for terminal 50.

In vehicles with a 6-cylinder engine, first remove the right front wheel and alternator, as well as the heat shield for the PTO shaft. Then unscrew the wire for terminal B+ and remove the plug connection for terminal 50.

3. In cars with a 4-cylinder engine, unscrew screws 1 and 2 and remove the starter downwards. In cars with a 6-cylinder engine, you must first remove the heat shield 3 from the traction relay. After this, you can unscrew the fastening screws (arrows) and remove the starter.

4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. During installation, the following tightening torques must be observed: fastening the starter to the gearbox (4-cylinder engine): M10 - 45 Nm, M12 - 65 Nm, fastening the starter to the engine (6-cylinder engine): 45 Nm, fastening the heat shield for the cardan shaft to the gearbox (6-cylinder engine): 23 Nm, terminal 8+ to the starter - 16 Nm, battery terminal to the battery pole - 6 Nm.

When connecting the battery, equipment such as the radio, navigation system and electric windows must be reactivated in accordance with the operating manual.
