Checking the seals and ends of the tie rods (Audi A4 B6)

The tie rod ends are located on the right and left between the tie rod and the steering knuckle (steering knuckle lever). The steel ball head is surrounded by a self-lubricating polymer, the cuff protects it from dirt and moisture. Tips with a defective cuff or play should be replaced immediately. There should be no play when moving the transverse steering rods and wheels.

1. Check the sealing boots (arrow) of the steering rod ends for cracks.

2. Check if there is any play in the tip. The best way to do this is to place the machine over an inspection pit.

3. Ask an assistant to turn the steering wheel a few times at a small angle, first one way, then the other. When moving the rods and wheels by hand, you can determine whether there is any play in the tips.

4. Check the tight fit of the lock nut 1. The nut must be tightened to a torque of 40 Nm.



5. If the cuff is damaged (sealing corrugated cover) the tip in the kit needs to be replaced.
